Yellowjackets Get First WIAC Win Behind Hall's Gem

Christian Hall pitched a one-hitter for the Yellowjackets Wednesday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Wednesday the weather wasn't much better for the Yellowjacket baseball team than it was the last time they took the field on Sunday, but their performance turned 180 degrees as they earned their first WIAC win of the 2015 season against UW-Stout.

Yellowjackets 5, Stout 0

The opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader was all about the pitching of Christian Hall (Siren, Wis./Siren). Hall, who pitched the Yellowjackets out of a long losing streak with a complete game win over Northland last week, one-upped himself with an absolute gem against Stout, shutting the Blue Devils down to the tune of just one hit as the Yellowjackets snapped a four-game losing skid and earned their first WIAC win of the season, beating the Blue Devils 5-0.

The only hit of the game surrendered by hall, who finished the game with five strikeouts, was an infield single against him in the eighth inning. The senior right hander kept the Blue Devils off base, and off the scoreboard, picking up his second win on the season, improving to 2-0.

After two scoreless innings the Yellowjackets scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the third inning. Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) and Alex Petroski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) walked and Wage stole third to put runners on the corners. Each moved up on a wild pitch, with Wage scoring the first run of the game. A double by Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) brought home Petroski with the second run, and Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) singled home Vold to give the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead after three.

In the sixth inning the Yellowjackets added another run. Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) was on third, and with Petroski at the plate broke for home. Petroski got the bunt down, working the suicide squeeze to perfection and increasing the Yellowjacket lead to 4-0.

An error in the bottom of the seventh inning put Flaherty on base with one out. He went to second on a Jordan Koepp (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) single. The bases were then loaded when Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) was hit by a pitch. Wiblin followed with a fly out to center field, scoring Flaherty with the final run of the game.

Koepp went 2-for-4 to lead the Yellowjackets offensively. For the game the Yellowjackets had six hits.

Hunter Dicus had the only hit of the game for Stout.

Stout 1, Yellowjackets 0

Both pitchers followed Hall's lead in the second game, with both starters going the distance and turning in stellar performances. Stout outhit the Yellowjackets 7-6 in the game.

Yellowjacket starter Kyle Gauger (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) kept the Blue Devils off balance, using an assortment of breaking and off-speed pitches. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four in addition to giving up the seven hits. Stout starter Drew Worth was equally as impressive. The left-hander walked three and struck out seven to earn the win.

It looked like the Yellowjackets were going to open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) walked and worked his way over to third place. Holden came to the plate with two outs and drilled Worth's offering up the middle. Quinones would have scored on the play, but the ball hit the base umpire on the fly and the home plate umpire ruled the play dead. Holden was awarded first base and the single, but Quinones was sent back to third, where he would be stranded.

Stout scored the only run of the game in the top of the fifth. After starting the inning with back-to-back singles, Clay Gale grounded out to score a run and give the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead.

In the seventh the Yellowjackets again threatened. Wage singled with one out and stole second. Petroski walked to put two runners on. With Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) at the plate, Wage broke for third and was hung up between second and third, but the pickoff play went awry and Wage reached third safely. Pitts then grounded into a fielder's choice, with Wage erased at home on the play. It looked like Wage slid in under the tag, and Yellowjacket Head Coach Nick Bursik disputed the call, but it was all for naught and the Yellowjacket threat was extinguished.

Wage went 2-for-3 in the game, with Vold, Flaherty, Wiblin and Holden collecting the other Yellowjacket hits.

Dicus had a three-hit game to pace Stout.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (5-24, 1-13) is a weekend series on the road at UW-La Crosse. Games on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26 are scheduled to get underway at 12:00 p.m.
