The Yellowjacket softball team took to the road for the final time in 2015, looking to shake the doldrums that come with a losing streak that had reached eight games heading into action Friday at UW-Eau Claire.

Eau Claire 6, Yellowjackets 3

For the bulk of their time in conference play, the Yellowjackets have fallen behind early, forcing themselves to have to battle from behind to get back into games, and unfortunately, that was the case in the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader in Eau Claire. The Blugolds scored in the first and then blew the game open in the fourth to take down the Yellowjackets 6-3.

Eau Claire plated a single run in the bottom of the first inning on a single from Casey Arnold. They extended the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three times. The big blow of the inning was a two-run home run from Amanda Fischer, and after four innings it was 4-0 Blugolds.

The Yellowjackets broke through in the top of the fifth inning, getting back in the game with a three-run inning. With one out Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn.) doubled to left center field. She moved to third base on a single by Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors). Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) came up and reached on an error, bringing Taipale home to get the Yellowjackets on the board. Two batters later Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) singled to center field, scoring both Fjeran and Thomfohrda, pulling the Yellowjackets to within one at 4-3.

Eau Claire got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Deanna Gilane homered to right center field to push the lead back up to 6-3.

The Yellowjackets threatened in the seventh, as they put two runners on base and brought the tying run to the plate, but Haider was retired and the Blugolds picked up the win.

Haider finished the game 2-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Yellowjackets offensively. She was the only Yellowjacket to have a multi-hit game. For the game the Yellowjackets had nine hits.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start in the circle and pitched a complete game, allowing six runs on 10 hits. She had a strike out but did struggle with control, as she walked five in the game.

Leah Wolff, Kenzie Winning, and Kelsey Meredith all had two hits for Eau Claire.

Eau Claire 5, Yellowjackets 2

In the second game offense was a little tougher to come by, as the team's battled in a duel of pitching and defense early and were tied 2-2 in the sixth inning. The Blugolds got the job done, however, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth and shutting down the Yellowjackets in the seventh to pick up the 5-2 win and a sweep of the conference doubleheader.

Eau Claire pounded five hits in the sixth inning alone. With two on and one out Fischer singled home the eventual game-winning run. Taylor Pierce later drove in two more insurance runs with a single.

The Yellowjackets opened the scoring in the top of the first when Haider sent a single through the left side, scoring Thomfohrda who opened the game with a double, giving the Yellowjackets a 1-0 edge.

Eau Claire took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on RBI-singles from Winning and Pierce.

In the top of the fifth inning the Yellowjackets capitalized on a pair of Eau Claire errors. Kari Shipman (Frazee, Minn.) reached on an error and later in the inning came across to score, tying the game at 2-2, when Thomfohrda reached on an error.

After Eau Claire took the late lead the Yellowjackets got the leadoff hitter on in the top of the seventh on a Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) single, but despite hitting the ball hard in the inning weren't able to bring her around.

Linzmeier was the only Yellowjacket to pick up two hits in the game, going 2-for-3. Haider, Thomfohrda, and Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Peguot Lakes) had the other hits for the Yellowjackets.

White started in the circle and pitched a complete game, giving up five runs on 12 hits. She walked two and struck out five as her record dropped to 0-4 for the year.

The Yellowjackets (15-15, 1-11 WIAC) will close out the 2015 season with a pair of doubleheaders at home this weekend. They will host UW-Stout at Liebaert Field Saturday, April 25 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
