The weekend marked the final road series of the 2015 season for the Yellowjacket baseball team, and UW-La Crosse made sure that Sunday turned out just like Saturday, as the Eagles scored early in each game and came away with a Sunday sweep, taking all four games on the weekend.

La Crosse 7, Yellowjackets 2

One of the things that has plagued the Yellowjackets in 2015 has been falling behind early, and that was the case in the opening game on Sunday, as the Eagles jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 7-2 win.

The Yellowjackets had a promising start to the contest, getting back-to-back two-out singles from Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) and Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity), but the inning stalled and both runners were stranded. In the bottom of the inning La Crosse plated three runs. And after a scoreless second inning La Crosse got singles run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to move ahead 6-0.

In the top of the sixth inning the Yellowjackets stopped the bleeding and got on the board, scoring their only two runs of the contest.

Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) led off with a single and Quinones followed with a walk. Flaherty came next and singled up the middle, scoring Vold with the first run of the game for the Yellowjackets. Jordan Koepp (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) then grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Quinones to pull the Yellowjackets to within 6-2.

La Crosse closed out the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Yellowjackets put a small threat together in the eighth, but were unable to move any runners across and stranded two on base. They were set down in order in the top of the ninth.

Christian Hall (Siren, Wis./Siren), just days removed from a one-hit gem, got the start on the mound and took the loss, falling to 2-1. He pitched 6.1 innings and allowed seven runs on 13 hits. He walked two and struck out one. Trevor Stone (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) pitched the rest of the way, pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless, hitless baseball.

The Yellowjackets had six hits in the game, led by Flaherty who was 2-for-3 with a run batted in.

Ben Morgan and Bryce Barsness each had three hits to lead La Crosse.

La Crosse 4, Yellowjackets 3

It's safe to say that last Sunday against Oshkosh, Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) had a rough outing on the mound for the Yellowjackets, as he lasted just two-thirds of an inning and took the loss. He made up for it a week later, as the pitched a complete game for the Yellowjackets and kept La Crosse at bay, but the offense didn't quite have enough left in the tank and the Yellowjackets dropped a tough 4-3 decision.

Lewis gave his team a chance to win, giving up just four runs on 13 hits in eight innings to go along with three walks and five strikeouts, but ultimately his record dropped to 0-7.

As they did in the first game La Crosse scored early, getting on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first to make it 1-0.

The Yellowjackets rallied to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Leadoff man Jake Irlbeck (Centerville, Minn./Centennial) walked and went to second when Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) reached on a fielder's choice. After a strikeout Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) doubled to right field, scoring Irlbeck and tying the game 1-1.

La Crosse didn't waste any time getting the run back, however, as they brought home two runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead.

The Yellowjackets again rallied, tying the game in the top of the sixth. Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) led off the inning with an infield single and stole second to move into scoring position. He would score when Bellin reached on an error to pull the Yellowjackets to within one. After two outs, Vold singled to right field, scoring Bellin with the tying run.

But just like they did earlier, La Crosse quickly countered, and regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. With two outs Alex Cordova singled, bringing home the eventual game-winning run, giving the Eagles a 4-3 lead.

From there the La Crosse pitchers shut the door, as the Yellowjackets got just one base runner on in the final three innings.

Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) led the Yellowjackets offensively in the second game, going 3-for-4. Pitts and Vold had two hits each, as the Yellowjackets knocked out nine hits in the game.

Cordova and Seth Feldman each had a four-hit game to pace the Eagles. Cordova also scored a run and drove in two.

The Yellowjackets (5-28, 1-17 WIAC) return home for a conference doubleheader with UW-Stout Wednesday, April 29. The first pitch from Ted Whereatt Field is set for 12:00 p.m.
