Yellowjackets Blanked by UW-Milwaukee

Box Score

UW-Milwaukee 7, Yellowjackets 0

Tuesday marked a bit of an historic occasion for the Yellowjacket baseball team. Although it wasn't the first time the Yellowjackets faced a Division I opponent, it was the first such meeting since 2011, when the Yellowjackets lost a pair of games to the University of Illinois-Chicago. That team's roster was dotted with players that currently make up the Yellowjacket coaching staff. So although it wasn't an historic first in program history, simply taking the field against a Division I opponent does have an historic significance.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, Tuesday's opponent, UW-Milwaukee also had an historic day, and their history-making moment was much more noteworthy.

Two pitchers combined to hurl the first no-hitter in school history, as the Panthers shut down the Yellowjackets and cruised to a 7-0 victory at Henry Aaron Park in Milwaukee.

Starting pitcher Alex McIntosh got credit for the victory and did the bulk of the heavy lifting, pitching seven innings and striking out 11. Mike Schneider came on in the eighth inning and finished the job for the Panthers, striking out two Yellowjackets in two innings. Each pitcher walked one hitter.

The Yellowjackets mustered just three base runners in the game - Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) walked in the fourth, Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) reached on an error in the seventh and Derek Cagle (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) walked in the eighth, but none of them were able to reach second base.

Offensively Milwaukee got off to a quick start, scoring three times in the first inning when Mitch Ghelfi took a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left center for a 3-0 lead. The Panthers scored single runs in the third and fourth innings before manufacturing two more in the fifth to make the final score 7-0.

Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) started for the Yellowjackets and after a rough 37-pitch first inning settled down somewhat and threw a solid game, going the distance but being tagged with the loss to fall to 1-3 on the year. He allowed seven runs on 10 hits in eight innings. He walked four and struck out nine, throwing 147 pitches in the process.

The Yellowjackets (3-14, 0-4 WIAC) will return to the field Wednesday when they play at Carroll University. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
