Carroll Shuts Down Yellowjackets

Jake Lewis
Box Score

Carroll 2, Yellowjackets 0

One of the beautiful things about sports is most of the time, after a rough outing, teams have the chance to get back on the field fairly quickly and rebound from a tough defeat. Such was the case for the Yellowjacket baseball team Wednesday. After being no-hit by UW-Milwaukee Tuesday, the Yellowjackets took the field on a wet and dreary Wednesday, hoping to get back in the win column against Carroll University.

Unfortunately, the lack of offense that plagued the team of late continued into Wednesday. The Yellowjackets mustered just three hits and were shut out for the third straight game, falling to the Pioneers 2-0.

The loss wasted a strong pitching performance from the Yellowjackets' Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor). The junior right-hander went the distance for the Yellowjackets, allowing just two runs on 10 hits in eight innings. He walked three and struck out eight in his best performance of the season.

Carroll got all of the offense it would need in the bottom of the first when Alex Olson hit a solo home run with two outs to give the Pioneers the 1-0 lead. Carroll added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Arron Buck scored on a two-out double by Clayton Schmitt to push the advantage to 2-0.

That's all the duo of Brian Jones and Aaron Roth would need, as they shut down the Yellowjackets. Jones started and pitched six innings, allowing two hits and getting the win. Roth earned the save, throwing three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.

The Yellowjackets got two hits from Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) and one from Alex Petroski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon).

Schmitt and Dylan Grove led Carroll with two hits apiece. For the game the Pioneers had eight hits.

The Yellowjackets (3-15, 0-4 WIAC) will try to snap its losing skid, which currently sits at eight games, when they return to WIAC play this weekend with a four-game series at UW-Platteville. Games are set for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12.
