Saturday marked the opening day of the final homestand of the season for the Yellowjacket baseball team, as they will close out the 2015 schedule after the weekend's four-game set with UW-Stevens Point at Ted Whereatt Field. Saturday the Yellowjackets dropped the first two games of the series, suffering a lopsided loss in the opener, followed by a one-run defeat in the second game.

Stevens Point 16, Yellowjackets 2

Stevens Point built up an early lead in the opener, but the Yellowjackets stayed within striking distance until the Pointers had back-to-back big innings late to pull away and rout the Yellowjackets 16-2.

Kyle McHugh got the scoring started, launching a pitch from Yellowjacket starter Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) over the fence in left field to give the Pointers a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Pointers added two more runs in the second and a single run in the third inning to open up a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth the Yellowjackets got on the board with a single run of their own. Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) walked and Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) singled to start the inning. Two batters later Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) singled to center field, loading the bases. Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) came up next and reached on an error, scoring Wiblin to get the Yellowjackets on the board.

Stevens Point then erupted in the top of the sixth, sending 13 men to the plate. Six of them reached on hits and the Pointers scored seven times to blow the game open. Cody Hanke had two hits and two RBI, while Jimmy Coady had two RBI in the inning to lead the Pointers.

Jordan Koepp (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) doubled to lead off the sixth for the Yellowjackets. He would come around to score on a single by Wage to make the score 12-2.

Stevens Point batted eight men in the seventh inning and scored four more times to make it a 16-2 game, more than enough to end the game after seven innings.

Wage had a good game at the plate, going 3-for-3, while Pitts and Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) each had two hits for the Yellowjackets.

Lewis settled down after a rough start for the Yellowjackets, going 5.2 innings and allowing 11 runs (10 hits) on eight hits. He walked four and struck out four. Trevor Stone (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) came on in relief and allowed five runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings.

Hanke had four hits and drove in four runs for the Pointers, who also got four runs batted in from Coady. Matt Kowalke pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Stevens Point 5, Yellowjackets 4

The second game was drastically different for the Yellowjackets, who jumped out to the first lead of the game, but in the end the Pointer offense was just too much and Stevens Point completed the sweep, eking out a 5-4 win.

Christian Hall (Siren, Wis./Siren) got the start on the mound for the Yellowjackets getting off to a strong start through the first two innings. He loaded the bases in the third, but pitched out of trouble to keep the game scoreless.

In the bottom of the third the Yellowjackets took their first lead of the day. Alex Petroski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) started things, driving the ball deep to left field. The Pointer outfielder tracked the ball but dropped it on the play and Petroski pulled in at second base. A strange decision by the Stevens Point catcher on a Derek Cagle (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) bunt put runners on the corners with nobody out. Vold later singled to left center field, bringing home Petroski with the game's first run. Quinones followed with another single that plated Cagle to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead.

Stevens Point came back quickly, however, tying the game in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run to left field by Ray Greco. In the top of the fifth Hall walked the leadoff hitter and he came in to score on a double by Coady and the Pointers moved ahead 3-2.

The Yellowjackets tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. With one out Wage walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Vold came up next and drew a walk. The pitch that was ball four got away from the Stevens Point catcher and he was unable to locate it, allowing Wage to score all the way from second base, evening the game at 3-3.

It looked as if the Yellowjackets were going to break the tie in the bottom of the sixth when Wiblin hammered a ball toward the gap in right center field. Stevens Point's Coady made a spectacular running catch on the play, then doubled Holden off at first to snuff out the Yellowjacket threat.

Stevens Point regained the lead in the top of the seventh when Bobby Gregorich led off the inning with a home run to right field. In the top of the eighth the Pointers added an insurance run on a Riley Spetz RBI single.

The Yellowjackets scratched out a run in the bottom of the eighth to pull back to within one. Vold led off with a single and was lifted in favor of pinch runner Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly). Bellin went to second when Quinones reached on an error. Both runners were sacrificed up a base and then Bellin came in to score on a ground out, cutting the deficit to one, 5-4.

Hall set the Pointers down in order in the ninth, but Pointer pitcher Nick Grebelski did the same in the bottom of the inning, getting the save and preserving the victory for Stevens Point.

The Yellowjackets had six hits in the second game, with Vold and Quinones getting two each.

Hall pitched a complete game for the Yellowjackets, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits. He walked five and struck out six.

Mitch Beau and Spetz each had three hits to lead the Pointers.

The Yellowjackets (6-31-1, 2-20 WIAC) and the Pointers will finish out the series with two games Sunday. With thunderstorms expected in the afternoon, the start of the games has been moved up to 10:00 a.m. Both games will be streamed live on the iFan Sports Network.
