Pointers Power Past Yellowjackets

The 2015 Yellowjacket baseball senior class with the coaching staff
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The final day of any season is always a difficult one, particularly for the seniors in the program that know that day will be the final one in a Yellowjacket uniform. Sunday was senior day for the Yellowjacket baseball team, and the class of 2015 wanted nothing more than to go out on a winning note and hand UW-Stevens Point a pair of losses as they head into the WIAC post-season.

But the Pointers had other ideas. Stevens Point came out hammering in the first game, then rode strong pitching in the second game to sweep both games on Sunday and the season-ending series against the Yellowjackets.

Stevens Point 11, Yellowjackets 2

The Pointers got off to a fast start, scoring four times in the top of the first inning. The big blow came when Jimmy Coady took Yellowjacket starter Kyle Gauger (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) deep for a three-run home run. Then in the second the Pointers added to the lead, scoring four more times, with three of the runs coming courtesy of consecutive home runs from Kyle McHugh, Coady, and Cody Hanke. They added a single run in the top of the third inning to open up an insurmountable lead early.

Stevens Point pushed across its 10th run in the top of the fifth before the Yellowjackets finally broke through.

Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) led off the fifth for the Yellowjackets with a walk, and Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) followed with a single. Alex Petroski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) then lined a single to center field that scored Holden. Three batters later Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) singled to center, scoring Wage, making the score 10-2.

Holden and Wage again reached base in the bottom of the sixth after the first two hitters were retired, but the Yellowjackets couldn't push either runner across.

Stevens Point closed out the scoring in the eighth when Bobby Gregorich hit the fifth home run of the game for the Pointers, lining a pitch over the fence in right field to make the final score 11-2.

Gauger had a tough outing, lasting just five innings and allowing 10 runs on 10 hits. He walked two and struck out three. Riley Grandson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) came on in relief and was very effective, giving up a run on one hit in four innings. He walked one and struck out eight Stevens Point hitters.

At the plate the Yellowjackets had 10 hits, with Vold, Jordan Koepp (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), Wage and Petroski all picking up two each.

Taylor Carlson had three hits and Coady had two hits and four runs batted in to pace the Pointers.

Stevens Point 4, Yellowjackets 0

The Pointers didn't pound the ball out of the park like they did in the first game, but they didn't have to, as starter Ben Miller shut the Yellowjackets down at the plate, going eight strong innings to lead the Pointers to the 4-0 win.

Miller and Yellowjacket starter Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) tossed zeroes through the first two innings. In the top of the third the Pointers got a single to lead off the inning and the runner moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. After a sacrifice moved the runner to third, Gregorich singled in the first run of the game.

It stayed 1-0 until the top of the sixth when the Pointers increased the lead on an RBI-double by Carlson. Two Pointers singles and an error plated another run in the top of the seventh. They added their fourth and final run in the ninth on a Hanke RBI double.

The second game was tough for the Yellowjacket offense, as they mustered just three hits against Miller and reliever Nick Prebelski. Vold, Holden, and Gregg Pitts had the hits for the Yellowjackets.

Wiblin went the distance for the Yellowjackets, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits. He walked four and struck out seven.

Carlson and Ray Greco each had two hits for the Pointers.
The Yellowjackets wrap up the season with a 6-33-1 record overall and a 2-22 mark in the WIAC. Sunday's games marked the final games in a Yellowjacket uniform for 11 seniors - Derek Cagle (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice), Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity), Kyle Gauger (Spooner, Wis./Spooner), Riley Grandson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East), Christian Hall (Siren, Wis./Siren), Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner), Jordan Koepp (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), Alex Petroski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon), Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa), Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls), and Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan).
