Laroche-Theune's Late Heroics Lifts Yellowjackets To Win

Trevor Laroche-Theune had a goal and an assist in the season-opening win over Augsburg Tuesday.

With the heat index soaring into the 90s in the Twin Cities, it's only fitting that Tuesday's men's soccer match between the Yellowjackets and Augsburg would also be hotly contested. The shots were nearly even and the two teams combined for five Yellow Cards in a match that appeared destined for at least one overtime period.

That was until a Yellowjacket elder statesman used the final minute to perform some heroics and give the Yellowjackets a win.

Trevor Laroche-Theune (LaPointe, Wis./Bayfield ) didn't have a 2014 season to remember. After scoring five goals and 12 points combined in his first two seasons with the Yellowjackets, Laroche-Theune didn't post a point in 14 games as a junior. He put an end to that hex in a big way Tuesday.

After assisting on a goal in the first half, Laroche-Theune found the back of the net in the final minute of regulation time, breaking a deadlock and lifting the Yellowjackets to a 2-1 victory over Augsburg under the lights in Minneapolis.

Laroche-Theune scored his first goal of the season and earned some style points in the process, leaping through the air at the left of the goal and directing a header past Augsburg goalkeeper Nick Lennertz with just 47 seconds to play in regulation.

The Yellowjackets opened the scoring at 17:34 of the first half. Laroche-Theune fed a pass to the middle of the field and Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset), from about 15 yards out, blasted a shot into the upper corner of the goal to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead.

It stayed that way through the break and into the second half, but shortly after halftime the Auggies tied the match. Barinedum Kordah got a pass at the top of the box and slid the ball past Yellowjacket goalkeeper Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) at the 45:40 mark to tie the game at 1-1.

From there the teams traded chances, with Augsburg outshooting the Yellowjackets 6-5 in the second half, but it was the last shot of the game that propelled the Yellowjackets to victory.

For the match the Yellowjackets outshot Augsburg 6-5, with Bucklew and Laroche-Theune each finishing with two shots on goal. Sam Connor had two shots for Augsburg.

Wilhelm, making his first career start, got the win for the Yellowjackets, finishing the match with four saves. At the other end Lennertz also had four saves and took the loss for Augsburg.

The Yellowjackets (1-0-0, 0-0-0 UMAC) return to action, again on the road, when they travel to Decorah, Iowa to take on Luther College Saturday, September 5. Game time against the Vikings is set for 1:00 p.m.
