Saturday was the second day of the Finlandia Invitational volleyball tournament in Hancock, Michigan, and the Yellowjacket volleyball team kept to its winning ways, taking both matches on the day to sweep the tournament and run its winning streak to five.

Yellowjackets 3, Northland 0

The Yellowjackets opened Saturday against a team they saw earlier in the week, Northland College. In the first meeting the Yellowjackets easily swept aside the Lumberjills, and it was more of the same Saturday, although the Yellowjackets had to dig a little deeper to get the 3-0 victory.

It looked like it was going to be easy going early, as the Yellowjackets jumped out to an 9-1 lead in the first set, but to Northland's credit they didn't throw in the towel and battled back to within a point, 11-10, with a 9-2 run of its own. The Yellowjackets rebuilt a small cushion before the Lumberjills again closed the gap and took the lead at 14-13. A 5-0 Yellowjacket run gave them a lead they wouldn't give up, and they won seven of the final 10 points to take the opening set. 25-17.

Northland came out gunning in the second set and moved ahead early. The Lumberjills built a five-point lead, 11-6, but the Yellowjackets came roaring back with an 8-1 run to take the lead. From there it was all Yellowjackets, as they outscored Northland 12-3 the rest of the way to win the set 25-16 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The took a big lead early in the second set, winning seven of the first eight points. The lead reached as many as 10 points, with the Yellowjackets up 16-6, and they would cruise the rest of the way, trading points with the Lumberjills to take the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.

Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko) was a monster for the Yellowjackets, leading the team with 11 kills in 13 attempts for an attack percentage of .846. The Yellowjackets finished the match with an attack percentage of .298. Molly Trapp (Esko, Minn./Esko) also had a big match for the Yellowjackets, finishing with nine kills. Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had another good match, setting up 34 points for the Yellowjackets.

Bandelin and Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) led the Yellowjackets on defense with 13 digs apiece.

Yellowjackets 3, Milwaukee School of Engineering 2

The second match for the Yellowjackets was not going to be easy, as the Yellowjackets faced a Milwaukee School of Engineering club that entered the match on a tear, winning nine of 10 matches to start the season. And despite getting crushed in the opening frame, the Yellowjackets kept it together and rallied to earn a tough and impressive five-set win.

It was all Raiders early, as they opened up a huge 13-2 lead out of the gates. In the set the most the Yellowjackets were able to string together was three straight points, and the Raiders cruised to a 25-10 win in the first set.

The Yellowjackets came back and took the second set 25-22. Trailing 8-5 the Yellowjackets rallied and tied the Raiders at 9-9 before taking the lead a point later. The Yellowjackets kept the lead until the Raiders took it back at 15-14. The Yellowjackets returned the favor and regained the edge at 17-16 on a Dahlin service ace. They would lead the rest of the way and an Ashlee Bayer (Cameron, Wis./Cameron) service ace ended the second set and evened the match 1-1.

In the third the teams traded points early before a Yellowjacket error gave the Raiders a 5-4 lead. MSOE would lead the rest of the way, keeping the Yellowjackets two-to-three points behind for most of the set before going on a 4-1 run to close out the third set with a 25-20 win.

The fourth set saw the teams play it close, but the Yellowjackets never trailed. A six-point lead at 12-6 quickly evaporated as the Raiders heated up and went on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 14-14. The Yellowjackets would take the lead back, but MSOE would again tie. That would happen five more times in the set before Trapp and VerWay produced back-to-back kills to give the Yellowjackets a 26-24 win, tying the match 2-2.

The deciding fifth set was just as tight and back-and-forth as the fourth. The teams were tied five times early in the set, but the Yellowjackets broke a 7-7 deadlock with an ace by Ana Biscaia (Curitiba, Brazil/Colégio Positivo), and they would never trail again. The Yellowjackets built the lead to as many as three points at 13-10 before the Raiders got back to within two. A service error on MSOE put the Yellowjackets on the brink of victory, and an attack error sealed it, giving the Yellowjackets at 15-10 victory in the set and a 3-2 win in the match.

Bandelin had another big match, leading the Yellowjackets with 16 kills. Bailey Romans (Duluth, Minn./East) added 10. VerWay had a career-high 42 assists. Bayer and Jasmine Richardson (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) each had two aces, while the Yellowjackets as a team had eight service aces.

On defense four players had double digit digs. Dahlin led the team with 23, while Richardson had 13 and VerWay and Karlie Leif (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) each contributed 10. Trapp and Romans were strong on the front line, finishing with five and four blocks in the match, respectively.

The Yellowjackets (7-2, 0-0 UMAC) have a day off before they return to entertain the Pipers from Hamline University. Game time Monday, September 14 is set for 7:00 p.m. at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
