Yellowjackets Keep On Rolling

As REO Speedwagon once said, you've got to roll with the changes. The 2015-16 season as seen a myriad of changes for the Yellowjacket women's basketball team, from losing all-time leading scorer Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) to changing conferences.

The Yellowjackets have done a fine job rolling with the changes, as they entered their game Friday night against North Central with a record of 11-2, 6-0 UMAC. The Yellowjackets also entered this game riding an eight game winning streak, and were looking to push it to nine against the Rams.

Cue up the music because the Yellowjackets keep on rolling as they defeated North Central by a final score of 85-54 to push their winning streak to a new program high of nine games.

The Yellowjackets started out strong in this matchup, opening the game on a 7-2 run that was capped by a Grace Kennedy (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic) jumper. North Central stormed back, going on a 10-2 run to take a 12-9 lead with 4:11 remaining in the first quarter.

The teams played back and forth for most of the quarter, with the Yellowjackets took the lead when Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) converted on all three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt with 1:25 remaining. Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) hit a jumper with 0:28 remaining to give the Yellowjackets a 20-16 lead, but the Rams hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Yellowjackets went into the first break holding a 20-19 lead.

The second quarter saw the Yellowjackets start to open this game up, as they used an 11-2 run to build a 35-26 lead with 2:54 remaining in the quarter. The Yellowjackets would close out the quarter on a 9-2 run, capped by a Hadley Skalmsoki layup as time was expiring, to go into halftime holding a commanding 44-28 lead.

The Yellowjackets put their depth on display in the third quarter as they build on their lead. Sarah Lekson (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) scored seven straight points for the Yellowjackets midway through the quarter as their lead grew to 29 points. The Yellowjackets went into the final break in command of the game as they held a 68-40 lead.

With the game firmly in hand, Yellowjacket Head Coach Don Mulhern was able to rest his starters for the entire fourth quarter. This allowed Coach Mulhern to get many of his reserves were able to valuable varsity playing time throughout the quarter.

The win also put Coach Mulhern in the Yellowjacket record books, as he is now tied with Dr. Roger Prescott for most wins as a head coach in Yellowjacket women's basketball history with 112.

This matchup saw a balanced Yellowjacket attack, as 15 players scored at least two points. Kennedy was the only Yellowjacket in double figures in this matchup, finishing with a season high 12 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

North Central was led by Lizzy Swanson, who finished with a game high 22 points. Jamie High had 13 points and 13 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

The Yellowjackets shot 53.1% from the field, going 3-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, while going 14-18 from the free throw line.

The Rams shot 29.8% from the field, going 3-17 from beyond the 3-point arc, while going 23-40 from the free throw line.
The Yellowjackets committed 18 turnovers. North Central committed 19.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (12-2, 7-0 UMAC) is a road game Saturday, January 16 against Northwestern. The game is being billed as the UMAC game of the week as Northwestern enters the game with a 12-3, 7-0 UMAC record. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
