Yellowjackets Winning Streak Reaches Six

Box Score

Yellowjackets 77, Minnesota Morris 64

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team entered 2016 on a five game winning streak. They were looking to push it to six games when they faced off against UMAC foe Minnesota Morris.

Despite an early deficit, the Yellowjackets saw their winning streak move to six games with a 77-64 victory over the Cougars.

The Yellowjackets were unable to find their shooting stroke to open up this matchup as they quickly fell behind Morris in the first quarter. A pair of Morris free throws with 2:39 remaining in the quarter pushed the Cougars lead to 17-9 and it looked like the Yellowjackets might be in trouble. The Yellowjackets used 6-3 run to end the quarter helped close the gap to 20-15 going into the first break.

The second quarter saw the Yellowjackets get their legs underneath them. A 12-2 run to open the second quarter, capped by a Hannah Norlin (Litchffield, Minn./Litchfield) layup saw the Yellowjackets build a 27-22 lead with 4:36 remaining in the quarter.

Morris answered right back, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game up at 27-27 with 3:32 remaining in the second. The Yellowjackets retook the lead 32-27 thanks to an Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) and-1 layup and a Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) jumper. The rest of the quarter saw a back-and-forth affair between these two teams as the Yellowjackets went into the half with a 39-35 lead.

The third quarter saw the Yellowjackets slowly build on the lead they went into the break with. A Sarah Lekson (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) 3-pointer with 2:41 remaining in the third gave the Yellowjackets a 48-42 lead. Morris once again fought back to narrow the gap, but the Yellowjackets closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run to go into the final break with a 57-46 lead.

The fourth quarter was all Yellowjackets as they saw their lead balloon to 19. Morris managed to cut the Yellowjacket lead to 73-62 with 1:54 remaining, but the Yellowjackets were able to close out this one to open 2016 with a conference victory.

Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) lead paced the Yellowjackets in this matchup, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Larson finished with a career high 15 points. Larson also had five rebounds.

Lekson had her best game of the season, finishing with 13 points on 5-7 shooting, while Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) finished with 11 points. Nelson just missed out on a double-double of her own, finishing with eight points and eight assists to go along with a team leading four steals.

Morris was led by Cori Becker, who finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, three assists, and one steal. Tori Hold was the only other Cougar in double figures, finishing with 12 points.

The Yellowjackets shot 43.1% from the field, going 4-11 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 11-22 from the free throw line.
