Yellowjackets Defeat Finlandia, Extend Streak

Box Score

Yellowjackets 81, Finlandia 60

What do the Energizer Bunny and the Yellowjacket women's basketball winning streak have in common? They keep going and going and going and going.

The Yellowjackets entered Saturday's game against Finlandia University on a 13 game winning streak, and looked to push it to 14 against the Lions.

A 33 point second quarter ensured that the streak would continue, as the Yellowjackets defeated the Lions 81-60.

Things looked a little iffy to start the game, as the Yellowjackets and Lions were exchanging the lead back-and-forth over the first four minutes of the first quarter. A Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) layup with 5:49 remaining in the quarter gave the Yellowjackets a 6-5 lead and they never looked back, as they outscored the Lions 12-8 over the remainder of the quarter.

The Yellowjackets really got serious in the second quarter, opening the quarter on an 8-0 run that was capped by a Bailee Bartunek (Audobon, Minn./Lake Park-Audobon) layup with 8:20 remaining. The Yellowjackets would watch their lead explode thanks to two 10-0 runs in the quarter. By the time the buzzer sounded to send the team to their halftime break, the Yellowjackets held a 51-21 lead.

With the game firmly in hand, Yellowjacket Head Coach Don Mulhern used much of the second half to garner valuable playing time for many of his reserves. By the time the final buzzer sounded in the fourth quarter, 12 Yellowjackets had played at least 12 minutes while 11 players had scored at least two points.
Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) paced the Yellowjackets in this matchup. In what was a homecoming of sorts for the Marquette, Mich. native, Lindberg finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Kontny finished with 15 points for the Yellowjackets, while Bartunek added eight points and nine rebounds.

Finlandia was led by Julia Daavettila, who finished with a game high 20 points and 16 rebounds. Brooke Pasanen was the only other Lion in double figures, finishing with 12 points.

The Yellowjackets shot 50.8% from the field, going 6-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 9-16 from the free throw line.

The Lions shot 30.5% from the field, going 9-31 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 15-17 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with 15 turnovers. Finlandia finished with 20.

The 14 game winning streak will be put on the line Friday, February 5 when the Yellowjackets (17-2, 11-0 UMAC) play host to UMAC foe Crown College. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m.
