The Yellowjacket women's basketball team has enjoyed their move to the UMAC. Coming into Saturday, they were sitting on top of the conference with a 5-0 UMAC record and were riding a seven game winning streak. They put that streak on the line against border rival St. Scholastica Saturday evening.

The Yellowjackets used a dominant, balanced effort in this matchup as they defeated their border-rival 87-72.

The game did not open up the way the Yellowjackets had envision, as they found themselves down 11-8 with 4:35 remaining in the first quarter. It was at this point the Yellowjackets turned on the jets, going on an 11-0 run to end the quarter and go into the first break holding a 19-11 lead.

The Yellowjackets saw that lead grow to 23-11 to open the second quarter thanks to a pair of layups by Bailee Bartunek (Audobon, Minn./Lake Park-Audobon) and Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior). The Saints cut the Yellowjacket lead to 23-16 thanks to a mini-run of their own, but the Yellowjackets quickly pushed the lead back to double figures thanks to a 6-0 run of their own.

The Saints came out firing in the second half, as they went on a 7-2 run to cut the Yellowjacket lead to 41-39. That was all the closer the Saints would get in the half, Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Yellowjacket lead to 49-41.

The Yellowjackets saw their lead grow back to double figures thanks to a pair of Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) free throws with 2:46 remaining in the third. Bartunek managed to push the lead to 64-51 as the third quarter ended with the Yellowjackets firmly in control.

The fourth quarter saw the Yellowjackets continue to push the lead, as it grew to 84-61 with 5:09 remaining. With the game in hand, Yellowjacket coach Don Mulhern went to his reserves to finish out the game as the first round of the border-battle went to the Yellowjackets.

Lindberg had one of her best games of the year in this one, finishing with 16 points and four rebounds off the bench. Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) continued her recent hot streak, finishing with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
