Yellowjackets take Border Battle Round II

Box Score

Yellowjackets 65, St. Scholastica 48

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team was in action Saturday as they traveled over the bridge to take on border-rival St. Scholastica. This is the second time that the Yellowjackets and Saints have played each other, with the Yellowjackets taking round one by a score of 87-72. The Yellowjackets were also looking to bounce back from their 77-72 loss Monday night to St. Catherine University.

After facing an early deficit, the Yellowjackets turned it on in the second half to take border-battle round II 65-48.

The Yellowjackets opened the game fairly quickly in this matchup, as they took an early 6-2 lead on a Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) layup with 6:46 remaining in the first quarter. St. Scholastica responded by going on a 6-0 run over the next 1:54 to take an 8-6 lead. The Saints would watch their lead grow to 17-11 with under a minute remaining in the quarter, but a pair of Kontny free throws as the quarter expired cut the St. Scholastica lead to 17-13.

The Saints looked to build on their first quarter success against the Yellowjackets and they did so quickly, opening the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 24-15 lead with 6:19 remaining. The Yellowjackets responded back, going on a 7-0 run of their own to cut the St. Scholastica lead to 24-22 on an Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) 3-poitner with 4:35 remaining. The Saints would build another eight point lead in the quarter, but the Yellowjackets would push back to go into halftime training St. Scholastica 32-28.

The third quarter has been the Yellowjackets quarter all season, and Saturday was no different. The Yellowjackets quickly erased the deficit, when Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) hit a layup with 9:00 remaining to tie the game up at 32-32. The Yellowjackets then went on a 13-3 run, capped by a Lindberg layup, to retake the lead and build a 45-35 lead with 1:56 remaining in the third. St. Scholastica would hit a layup to cut the Yellowjackets lead down to 45-37, but the damage had already been done as the Yellowjackets outscored the Saints 17-5 in the quarter.

The momentum gained in the third quarter carried over to the fourth quarter as the Yellowjackets continued to build on their lead. The Yellowjackets outscored the Saints 20-11 in the quarter, as their lead grew to 20 points with less than a minute remaining. By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Yellowjackets found themselves back to their winning ways as they defeated border-rival St. Scholastica.

Sarah Lekson (North Branch, Minn./North Branch), Kontny, and Lindberg all had strong games for the Yellowjackets, as they all finished with 12 points. Bailee Bartinek finished with a game high 12 rebounds, including nine on the offensive glass, while Skalmoski finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.

St. Scholastica was led by Danica Schellbach, who finished with a team high 10 points.

The Yellowjackets shot 36.8% from the field, going 2-12 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 13-18 from the free throw line.

The Saints shot 36.5% from the field, going 5-17 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 5-9 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with 15 turnovers. The Saints finished with 24.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (20-3, 14-0 UMAC) is a home matchup against Northwestern on Friday, February 19. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m.
