The 2015-16 season has been very memorable thus far for the Yellowjacket women's basketball team. Over the course of the season head coach Don Mulhern became the winningest coach in program history, the Yellowjackets set records for longest winning streak at 16 games, and the Yellowjackets established a new single season high in wins, at 21 games and counting.

None of that mattered on Friday night in Superior, as the Yellowjackets played host to Northwestern in a game to determine who would be the UMAC Regular Season Champion.

The Yellowjackets started out fast in this matchup, as they opened the game on a 10-2 run, capped by a Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) layup with 5:44 remaining in the first quarter. All of a sudden, the Eagles woke up. Northwestern closed out the half on a 14-1 run as the Yellowjackets saw their fast start turn into a shocking 16-11 deficit at the end of the first quarter.

Despite the five point deficit, the Yellowjackets refused to falter, and they showed that in a big way to open the second. Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) hit back-to-back 3-pointers which was followed shortly by a Kontny jumper, and just like that the Yellowjackets and Eagles were tied at 19-19 with 9:07 remaining in the second. Northwestern then built their lead back up to five, but the Yellowjackets responded to take a lead of their own at 28-27 on a Hannah Norlin (Litchffield, Minn./Litchfield) layup with 5:40 remaining. The teams then went on to exchange points the rest of the way, with the Eagles holding a narrow 34-33 lead over the Yellowjackets at the half.

While the third quarter has been the Yellowjackets all season, it was the Eagles who looked to lay the finishing blow early in the second half. Northwestern managed to push their lead up to 43-36 with 3:13 remaining in the third quarter, and it looked like the Yellowjackets may be in trouble. This was not the case however, as the Yellowjackets once again fought their way back, going on a 7-0 run to end the quarter and go into the final break tied at 43-43.

The Yellowjackets third quarter dominance waited until the fourth quarter to show up in this matchup. A Kontny layup and free throw with 8:58 remaining gave the Yellowjackets a 46-45 lead and they never looked back from there, outscoring the Eagles 22-11 to take home their first UMAC Regular Season Championship and clinch the first seed in the UMAC playoffs.

Kontny led the Yellowjackets in this one, finishing with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Lindberg provided a big spark off the bench for the Yellowjackets, finishing with 14 points, while Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) added 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Northwestern was led by Taryn Tumbleson, who finished with 13 points. Regan Cooper added 10 for the Eagles.

The Yellowjackets shot 38.2% from the field, going 7-23 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 19-24 from the free throw line.

Northwestern shot 44.7% from the field, going 6-19 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 8-9 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished the game with 24 turnovers. Northwestern finished with 22.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (21-3, 15-0 UMAC) is a home matchup against North Central University Saturday, February 20 in the regular season finale. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 5:00 p.m.
