Yellowjackets Split Sunday at Finlandia Dome Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket softball team was in action Sunday looking to bounce back after a pair of tough, extra-inning losses to open their season. The Yellowjackets were hoping for better luck on day two as they took on Concordia (WI) and Simpson.

Yellowjackets 4, Concordia (WI) 3 (8 innings)

Things did not look good early for the Yellowjackets in their first matchup of the day.

The Yellowjackets went down 1-2-3 in their half of the inning to give way to Concordia, who capitalized early.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) gave up a lead-off single to the Falcons, but proceeded to get the next two batters out via strikeout and fly out. It looked as though Hendrickson would get out of the inning unscathed, but Concordia's Kendra Little had other plans, as she blasted a shot over the fence for a 2-run home run to give the Falcons an early 2-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets got one back in the top of the 5th by playing a little small ball. Michayla Grahek (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) opened the inning with a single and then advanced to third when Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee) hit into a fielder's choice that the Concordia shortstop misplayed. Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) then executed a perfect squeeze play to score Grahek and cut the deficit to 2-1.

A pair of defensive lapses by the Falcons in the 6th led to the Yellowjackets tying up the score. Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) hit a ground ball that the Falcons shortstop misplayed to allow her to advance to second. Two batters later Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) ripped one at the Concordia shortstop and once again it was misplayed allowing Misco to score.

Concordia retook the lead in the bottom half of the 6th when Little opened the half inning with her second home run of the game. The Falcons generated another scoring opportunity later in the inning, but the Yellowjackets got the runner out at home on a failed double-steal attempt to end the threat.

Defensive lapses by the Falcons in the top half of the 7th allowed the Yellowjackets to tie the game up at 3-3. Shipman reached with one out in the inning, and advanced to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) hit a ball down the first base line that was misplayed allowing Shipman to score all the way from second.

With the score tied up at 3-3, the Yellowjackets and the Falcons would have to go into extra innings to decide the winner. This would mark the third extra inning game for the Yellowjackets in their first three games of the season. It did not take long for the Yellowjackets to score the go-ahead run in this one. With Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) on second, Misco hammered a single to the right fielder that advanced Gidley to second. The Falcon right fielder booted the ball allowing Gidley to score all the way from second to give the Yellowjackets a 4-3 lead.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the eight, the Yellowjackets competed a 9-6-4 double-play to close out the game and take home their first victory of the season.

Hendrickson pitched a complete game, giving up three runs (all earned) on nine hits. She had four strikeouts.

Misco, Grahek, Shipman, and Wilke had the four hits for the Yellowjackets in the game.

Simpson 8, UW-Superior 0 (5 innings)

The Yellowjackets once again found themselves in a hole in the fourth, and final, game of the Finlandia Dome Tournament.

Simpson opened up the first inning with a one-out home run by Taylor Davis to go up 1-0. Four batters later Rachel Guessford hit a ground-rule double that scored another run, as Simpson took a 2-0 lead after one inning.

The Yellowjackets had no answer for the Simpson offense in the second inning, as Riley Fischer homered to open the inning. Simpson then made it 4-0 when Grace Hall hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Simpson would end the inning with a 5-0 lead when an error by Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) with two outs allowed a run to score.
Simpson would score three more runs in the third to cap off the scoring.

Kayla Hartl (Medford, Wis./Medford Area) started for the Yellowjackets, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits. Bailey Armstrong (Scandia, Minn/Forest Lake) came in to relieve Hartl, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing one run (earned) on one hit.

Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) and Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) had the hits for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (1-3, 0-0 UMAC) now have nearly two full weeks off before traveling to Fort Myers, Fla. for their spring break trip. The opening games take place on Friday, March 11 when the Yellowajckets take on Nichols College and Augsburg College. Game times are set for 11:00 a.m and 1:00 p.m.
