The Yellowjacket women's basketball team was in action Friday when they took on UMAC foe Crown College. The Yellowjackets were looking to turn their 14 game winning streak into a 15 game winning streak following the game.

After starting out slow, the Yellowjackets turned it on over the final three quarters to defeat Crown 86-47.

Things did not look good early for the Yellowjackets, as Crown opened up an 11-2 lead with 5:39 remaining in the first. This game had the feeling of a possible upset as the Yellowjackets were struggling to put the ball in the hoop. Luckily, the Yellowjackets woke up and went on an 8-2 run, capped by a Hannah Norlin (Litchffield, Minn./Litchfield) jumper, to cut the Crown lead to 13-10 with 0:35 remaining. Crown hit a three as the quarter expired as the Yellowjackets saw themselves facing a 16-10 deficit at the end of the first.

Back-to-back 3-pointer by Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) early in the second seemed to awaken the Yellowjackets, as they went on an 18-0 run in the third to retake the lead and more as a pair of Norlin free throws with 4:26 remaining in the second made it 28-18 Yellowjackets. Crown would only score seven points in the quarter as the Yellowjackets used their stifling defense to help set up their offense and take a 39-23 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter saw the Yellowjacket lead balloon as they kept up the relentless pressure. The Yellowjackets employed their zone defense, using their size to an advantage to wreak havoc on the Storm. By the time the buzzer sounded for the final break, the Yellowjackets had outscore Crown 31-11 in the quarter as they held a 70-34 lead.

With the game in hand, Yellowjacket Head Coach Don Mulhern was able to get many of his reserves extended playing time through much of the fourth quarter as the Yellowjackets coasted in to victory.

Bailee Bartunek (Audobon, Minn./Lake Park-Audobon) led the way for the Yellowjackets in this one, finishing with 16 points on 8-9 shooting and seven rebounds off the bench. Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) added 12 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) finished with 10 points and three steals.

Every Yellowjacket that saw the floor scored at least one point in this game.

Crown was led by Sam Mauer, who finished with 10 points.

The Yellowjackets shot 43.4% from the field, going 5-21 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 15-24 from the free throw line.

Crown shot 37% from the field, going 3-14 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 10-15 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished the game with 11 turnovers. Crown finished the game with 28.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (18-2, 12-0 UMAC) is a home rematch against Minnesota Morris on Saturday, February 6. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 5:00 p.m.
