Box Score

Yellowjackets 71, Minnesota Morris 51

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team was in action Saturday when they took on UMAC foe Minnesota Morris. The Yellowjackets were looking to build on their 15 game winning streak as they faced the Cougars.

By the time the final horn sounded, the Yellowjackets saw their winning streak move to 16.

Much like the previous night's game against Crown College, the Yellowjackets struggled to score to open the game. These struggles quickly led to a 9-2 deficit, as the Yellowjackets were facing an uphill battle over the final 7:22 of the first quarter. Showing no signs of worry despite facing the deficit, the Yellowjackets began to slowly chip away at the Cougar lead. An Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) layup as the quarter expired saw the deficit all but vanish, as the Yellowjackets went into the first break down 18-16, but holding all the momentum.

Minnesota Morris opened up the second quarter fighting for their lives as the Yellowjackets kept trying to erase the deficit. That fight proved to be a losing one, as the Yellowjackets tied the game up at 24-24 with 3:35 remaining in the second on a Hannah Norlin (Litchffield, Minn./Litchfield) layup. A couple of minutes later Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) gave the Yellowjackets their first lead of the game at 28-27 on a layup with 1:42 remaining. A pair of free throws from Larson and one from Nelson pushed the Yellowjacket lead to 31-27 as they went into the halftime break.

The third quarter has been the Yellowjackets all season and Saturday night was no different. Nelson hit a 3-pointer on the Yellowjackets first possession to set the tone for the rest of the quarter. The Yellowjackets saw their lead balloon in the third thanks to a 13-0 run in the middle portion of the quarter. The run, capped by a Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) jumper with 3:03 remaining put the Yellowjackets up 46-31 to give them control of the game. A Brittany Laehn (Gilmanton, Wis./Gilmanton) jumper at the buzzer sent the Yellowjackets into the final quarter with a 54-39 lead.

The Yellowjackets opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run as they looked to put away the Cougars. The run, capped by a Nelson 3-pointer, gave the Yellowjackets a 63-39 lead with 6:29 remaining. With the game firmly in hand, the Yellowjackets went on cruise control the rest of the way as the soundly defeated Minnesota Morris.

Kontny led the Yellowjackets in this matchup, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She also had three steals and two assists.

Nelson had a double-double of her own in this matchup, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. This is the first double-double of Nelson's career.

Grace Kennedy (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic) and Norlin each chipped in 10 for the Yellowjackets.

Kendra Raths was the leading scorer for the Cougars, finishing with eight points and six rebounds.

The Yellowjackets shot 42.9% from the field, going 2-12 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 9-14 from the free throw line.

Minnesota Morris shot 36.2% from the field, going 7-21 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 10-11 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished the game with 14 turnovers. Morris finished the game with 21.

The next game for the Yellowjackets (19-2, 13-0 UMAC) will come on short rest, as they travel to St. Paul, Minn on Monday, February 8 to take on St. Catherine University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
