Yellowjackets' Streak Stopped at 16

Box Score

St. Catherine 77, Yellowjackets 72

All good things must end someday. At least that's what folk rock duo Chad & Jeremy said in their 1964 hit 'A Summer Song.' That couldn't hold truer for the Yellowjacket women's basketball team Monday night after they fell on the road to St. Catherine University 77-72 to snap their 16 game winning streak, which spanned over two months.

The Yellowjackets started out very slow in this matchup, finding themselves in a 5-0 hole with 8:02 remaining in the first quarter. The Yellowjackets managed to cut the deficit to 7-4 on a Sarah Lekson (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) layup with 6:53 remaining in the quarter, but St. Kate's followed that up with an 11-2 run to take an 18-6 lead with 2:16 remaining. By the time the buzzer sounded to end the quarter, the Yellowjackets saw themselves facing a 24-14 deficit.

The Yellowjackets cut the deficit to 24-18 to open the second quarter thanks to layups by Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) and Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti). That was all the closer the Yellowjackets could get in the quarter, as St. Kate's went on a 13-6 run over the final 7:15 to take a 39-24 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter has been the Yellowjackets all year, and Monday night was no different. Staring a 17 point deficit in the face following the opening possession, the Yellowjackets offense finally woke up. The deficit was finally erased at the 2:58 mark of the quarter when Grace Kennedy (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic) hit a jumper to tie the game up at 58-58. Following a St. Kate's layup that gave them back the lead, Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) drained a 3-pointer to give the Yellowjackets their first lead of the game at 48-47 with 2:20 remaining in the third. These two teams then started exchanging leads, and by the time the buzzer sounded to end the quarter the Yellowjackets and the Wildcats were all tied up at 53-53.

This game had the feel of one that would go down to the wire, and that is exactly what happened. A Lekson layup with 9:24 remaining gave the Yellowjackets a 55-53 lead, but the Wildcats fought right back, going on a 6-0 run to take a 59-55 lead with 7:57 remaining. The Wildcats then held on to the lead for the next five minutes, but the Yellowjackets kept hanging right in there, as they managed to tie the game up at 69-69 with 1:55 remaining on a pair of Nelson free throws.

St Kate's responded by going on a 6-0 run and it looked like the game might be over. Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) made it interesting as she hit a 3-pointer with 0:15 remaining in the quarter to cut the Yellowjacket deficit to 75-72. The Yellowjackets were forced to foul and St. Kate's hit their free throws, as the Yellowjackets saw their winning streak ended.

The Yellowjackets were led by Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) in this matchup. Kontny finished with a team high 21 points and three steals, going a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.

Nelson just missed out on her second consecutive double-double, finishing with 13 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Larson chipped in 11 for the Yellowjackets.

The Wildcats were led by LaShay Holt, who finished with a game high 22 points and 12 rebounds. Hold also had four assists. Mari Lee had 15 points for St. Kate's. Audra Clark finished with 13 points, while Shauna Horsch chipped in 11.

The Yellowjackets shot 34.8% from the field, going 3-13 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting a perfect 21-21 from the free throw line.

St Kate's shot 41.1% from the field, going 8-20 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 23-30 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with 18 turnovers. The Wildcats finished with 17.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (19-3, 13-0 UMAC) will be a trip over the bridge Saturday, February 13 to take on border-rival St. Scholastica. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
