Yellowjackets Tie Falcons to Win Season Series

Box Score

Yellowjackets 2, UW-River Falls 2

The Yellowjacket men's hockey team had a rare Tuesday night game when they faced off against UW-River Falls at Wessman Arena. Badly in need of a pick-me-up following a 9-1 loss at the hands of UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, the Yellowjackets gave the Falcons all they could handle, as the two teams skated to a 2-2 tie.

Things started out badly for the Yellowjackets in this one. Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor) took a two minute minor for Elbowing 0:32 into the game. Six seconds later Terry Leabo scored his second goal of the season for UW-River Falls to put the Yellowjackets in an early 1-0 hole.

The Yellowjackets continued to look sluggish following the early goal, as UW-River Falls won most of the face off attempts and were easily outshooting the Yellowjackets. That all changed at the 9:20 mark of the first when Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute)'s ninth goal of the game tied it up at 1-1. Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) and Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) got the assist on the even strength tally that seemed to breathe life into the Yellowjackets.

After a scoreless second period, the Falcons were able to once again take the lead. With the Yellowjackets down a skater following a David Kenney (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) tripping minor at 2:37, UW-River Falls struck. Christian George's shot at the 3:49 mark of the third found its way into the back of the net and just like that the Yellowjackets once again found themselves down a goal at 2-1.

Thankfully for the Yellowjackets the deficit was short lived thanks to Lukas Denk (Brno, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Globe). Denk buried a rebound off of a Jared Dedenbach (Warren, Mich./Fargo South) shot at the 6:18 mark of the third and just like that the score was tied up at 2-2. The goal, which was the first of Denk's career, was assisted by Dedenbach and Reed Murray (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial). That assist marks the first point in Dedenbach's collegiate career.

The Yellowjackets nearly managed to take the lead late in the third period, but a shot by Svensson got deflected over the top of the net. With the score tied up at 2-2, the Yellowjackets and Falcons went into overtime. Despite outshooting UW-River Falls 5-1 in the period, the Yellowjackets were unable to find the net one more time as they settled for the tie.

Bryce Fink (Tacoma, Wash./Keystone) started in net for the Yellowjackets and he was outstanding. Fink allowed two goals, but it could have easily been many more as he made some phenomenal saves to keep the game close. Fink finished with 32 saves in the game. He is now 2-4-3 on the season.

Tanner Milliron got the start in the net for the Falcons and played just as well as Fink, allowing two goals while making 31 saves. Milliron is now 12-6-4 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took five penalties for 10 minutes. The Falcons took five penalties for 18 minutes.

UW-River Falls went 2-4 on the power play, while the Yellowjackets were 0-3.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (8-13-3, 2-4-1 WIAC) is a road trip to Eau Claire, Wis. to take on UW-Eau Claire in the regular season finale. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on 91.3 FM in Superior beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45. Jon Garver will have the call.
