Yellowjackets Open Spring Trip with Two Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket softball team hit the road earlier this week to head down to Ft. Myers, Fla. to take part in their annual spring trip at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Yellowjackets have traditionally done very well on this trip, and they were hoping that the 2015-16 season would be no different.

UW-Superior 3, Nichols 2
Box Score

The first matchup of the trip pitted the Yellowjackets against Nichols, and it looked like the Yellowjackets were going to start the trip out on a sour note.

With the Yellowjackets offense struggling, they found themselves losing to Nichols 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh. Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) ensured that the Yellowjackets would get to see at least one more inning with one swing of the bat, launching a home run to left center field to tie the game up at 1-1.

After the Yellowjackets let in the go-ahead run in the top of the eight, it was time once again for some offensive heroics. With a runner on second to start the bottom of the inning, Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) hit an infield single to advance the runner to third. Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Pamela McLeod (Gillam, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall Prep) and advanced Wilke to third. With no outs in the inning and the game tied up a 2-2, Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) laced a single to left field that scored Wilke for the game winning run.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets and pitched a gem. Hendrickson pitched a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits. She finished the game with 10 strikeouts while only giving up two walks. Hendrickson moves to 2-1 on the season.

Meghan Sears got the start for Nichols. Sears pitched seven-plus innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits.

UW-Superior 3, Augsburg 1
Box Score

The second matchup of the day for the Yellowjackets saw them take on Augsburg College. After a come-from-behind victory earlier, the Yellowjackets were looking to make it two wins in a row.

The Yellowjackets got on the board first in this matchup. With one out in the first, Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee) doubled to put a runner in scoring position. Two batters later Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) laced a single that scored Shipman from second.

Augsburg got the run back in their half of the first. Yellowjacket starting pitcher Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) hit the first batter of the game who proceeded to steal both second and third to get into scoring position. With one down in the bottom of the first Augsburg knocked the run in on a groundout to third base to tie the score up at 1-1.

The offenses both quieted down significantly after the first inning as both pitchers started to find their groove. It was the Yellowjackets that finally managed to break through in the top half of the sixth inning. Shipman and Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. The right fielder misplayed the ball on Misco's single to allow Shipman to score all the way from first base to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead. Michayla Grahek (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) then gave the Yellowjackets a little bit of breathing room one batter later when she singled home Misco to give the Yellowjackets a 3-1 lead.

That was all the lead the Yellowjackets would need as Hanson closed the door on Augsburg to preserve the win.

Hanson pitched a gem of her own in this matchup. She went the full seven innings, allowing only one run on three hits while striking out 10. She is now 1-1 on the season.

Courtney Larsen got the start for Augsburg. Larsen pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

The Yellowjackets (3-3, 0-0 UMAC) will be back in action Saturday, March 12 when they take on Dominican University and Geneva College. Game times are set for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
