Yellowjackets Take Two More in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket softball team was back in action Saturday looking to build off of the victories they earned in the first day of their Florida trip. The Yellowjackets were set to take on Dominican University and Geneva in the second day of their spring trip. Yellowjackets head coach Roger Plachta was only one victory away from reaching 300 wins coming into the day, so the Yellowjackets had an increased sense of urgency to take home a pair of victories today.

Yellowjackets 3, Dominican University 2
Box Score

The first game of the day pitted the Yellowjackets up against Dominican University, and things did not look good in the early going for the Yellowjackets

Dominican took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a 2-run home run off of Yellowjacket starter Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld). Following the home run, Dominican laced a double down the left field line to put another runner in scoring position. Hendrickson did not lose composure, as she struck out the next batter and ended the half-inning by inducing a fly out.

After a pair of 1-2-3 innings, the Yellowjackets were able to get one back in the bottom of the third. Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) hit a single to left field, and was knocked in by Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity)'s double to left field to cut the deficit to 2-1. Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee) then bunted Thomfohrda over to third, advancing to second on the throw to third, but Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) grounded out to end the scoring threat.

The Yellowjackets took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) hit a single through the left side and then stole second. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Thomfohrda came through again, lacing a double to the right center gap to drive in Wilke. Shipman then drove in Thomforda with a single to left field as the Yellowjackets turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

The one run lead was all that Hendrickson would need, as she set down Dominican in order over the next two innings to preserve the victory and give coach Plachta his 300th win.

After the rough first inning, Hendrickson settled down to pitch the complete game. She allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three and only walking one. Hendrickson is now 3-1 on the season.

Michelle Behrens got the start for Dominican, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three in four innings. Behrens was relieved by Haley Locher, who gave up two runs on three hits in two innings pitched. Locher took the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season.

Yellowjackets 8, Geneva College 0 (5 innings)
Box Score

The second game of the day saw the Yellowjackets pitted up against Geneva College. Unlike in the previous game, the Yellowjackets took command early in this one.

With the game tied up 0-0 going into the bottom of the third, the Yellowjackets broke the game loose. With the bases loaded and no outs, Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) hit into an RBI fielder's choice to break up a 0-0 tie. With the bases still loaded and no outs, thanks to a Geneva error, Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) hit a sacrifice fly to score Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity). Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) then singled to left field to score Shipman making the score 3-0. Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) followed up Partick's RBI single with a 2-RBI single to left field, advancing to second on the throw to put the Yellowjackets up 5-0. Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) then singled to right field to score White putting the Yellowjackets up 6-0.

By the time the third inning was completed, the Yellowjackets had sent 10 batters to the plate.

The Yellowjackets tacked two more runs on in the fourth inning, as they cruised to victory.

Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) got the start for the Yellowjackets, striking out four in two perfect innings. She was relieved by White, who allowed one hit over the final three innings to earn her first victory of the season. White is now 1-0 on the year.

Emily Keslar got the start for Geneva, allowing eight runs (five earned) on eight hits while pitching a complete game.

The Yellowjackets now have a day off before getting back to action Monday, March 14 when they take on Salem State University and the College at Brockport. Game times from Ft. Myers, Fla. are set for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
