Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Yellowjackets baseball team opened up their season with a pair of nine-inning games against Wesleyan. The Yellowjackets were looking to start out 2015-16 season on a high note after a tough 2014-15 season.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, Wesleyan proved to be too much to handle

Wesleyan 9, Yellowjackets 8 (11 innings) (March 12)
Box Score

The first game of the Yellowjackets season turned out to be a bit of a marathon. First of all the game was scheduled for nine innings when the Yellowjackets usually play seven-inning games. Then, as if the extended game was not enough, this game had to be decided in extra innings.

After a scoreless first, the Yellowjackets came out swinging in their half of the second. Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) opened the inning by reaching on an error and advancing to second. Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) then hit a double to drive in Miller. Jacob Irlbeck then walked to put two on with no outs. Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) then laced a shot that the Wesleyan shortstop misplayed, his second error of the inning, to score Cuello. The Yellowjackets then pushed their lead to 3-0 when Mike Moskaylk (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada/St. Patrick) hit into a fielder's choice to score Irlbeck.

After Wesleyan got one back in the top-half of the third, the Yellowjackets went back to work. Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) opened the half-inning with a triple and then scored on an Irlbeck single. Boyde then hit a single of his own that drove in Miller as the Yellowjackets held a 5-1 advantage through three innings.

Things looked like they were going to unravel in the sixth inning, as Wesleyan scored three runs to cut the Yellowjacket lead to 5-4, but the Yellowjackets were able to answer back in their half of the sixth.

Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) hit a one-out single and then advanced to third when Stephen Albertson (Stillwater, Minn/Stillwater)'s shot toward the shortstop was misplayed. Albertson then took second, allowing Wage to score on an error by the Wesleyan catcher. Miller capped off the inning by hitting a two run homer, as the Yellowjackets pushed their lead to 8-4.

Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets were unable to hold onto the lead, as Wesleyan scored twice in the seventh, once in the eight, and once in the ninth to tie the game up at 8-8. The Yellowjackets had a chance in the bottom half of the ninth. With one out Cuello reached base and advanced to third on an error by the Wesleyan center fielder. Irlbeck than walked and advanced to second, but Boyde struck out and Moskaylk grounded out to end the threat.

The Yellowjackets had another golden opportunity in the bottom of the 10th, as Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and Thomas got into scoring position with two outs, but Miller struck out looking, as the game continued.

Wesleyan broke through in the top of the 11th, lacing a one-out triple before the next batter knocked in the go-ahead run. The Yellowjackets managed to get a runner in scoring position with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, but Bellin liked out to second to end the game.

Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out six in six innings of work. He was relieved by Jonah Lundequam (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland), who gave up two runs while facing five batters without getting an out. Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) pitched the final five innings for the Yellowjackets, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out four. Lewis took the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, Wesleyan jumped all over them early, and the Yellowjackets were unable to recover.

Wesleyan scored three in the bottom of the second, as the Yellowjackets found themselves in an early hole. They got one back in the top of the third when Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) hit a leadoff triple and was driven in by a Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) ground out.

That was all the offense the Yellowjackets were able to muster in this one, as they gave up two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, and two in the seventh to fall to Wesleyan 10-1 in the rematch.
