Yellowjackets Take Down Knox and Wooster

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket softball team was back in action Tuesday morning to continue their spring trip. The Yellowjackets were taking on Knox College and The College of Wooster as they looked to bounce-back following their 2-0 lost to Brockport the day before.

Box Score

The first game of the day pitted the Yellowjackets up against Knox College, and they certainly didn't disappoint.

This game was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings, as neither teams offense could get anything going. That all changed in the top half of the fifth. Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) led off the inning with a triple and then scored when Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) hit a ball that was misplayed at first.

White then stole second and advance to third on an error by the Knox shortstop. Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) grounded out to the shortstop to knock in White to put the Yellowjackets up 2-0. The lead reached 3-0 when Brittany Thomfohrdha reached on a fielder's that was misplayed by Knox allowing Brooke Dahlin (Hermantown, Minn/Hermantown) to score all the way from second.

A defensive misplay in the sixth inning allowed the Yellowjackets to score another pair of runs. With Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) on first base, Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) hit a single to left field. The left fielder misplayed the ball allowing Misco to score from first and Taipale to advance to third. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) then hit a pinch hit ground out to drive in Taipale pushing the Yellowjackets lead to 5-0.

The Yellowjackets would score three more runs in the top half of the seventh as they defeated Knox 8-0.

Kelsey Boyd (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) got the start for the Yellowjackets, giving up no runs while allowing four hits. Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) relieved Boyd, pitching three shutout innings of relief, striking out four. Kayla Hartl (Medford, Wis./Medford Area) pitched the final two innings, striking out two. Hendrickson was the winning pitcher, as she moves to 3-1 on the season.

Box Score

The second game of the day saw the Yellowjackets take on The College of Wooster as they looked to win their fourth straight game.

The Yellowjackets jumped all over Wooster early in this matchup. Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) reached on a throwing error by the Wooster first baseman. Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee) then reached on a fielding error by the first baseman on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Thomfohrda came home on the play, but Shipman got caught in a rundown before getting tagged out at second.

Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) then reached on an error. Misco then advanced to second when Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) hit into a fielder's choice that the Wooster shortstop misplayed. Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) than singled to right field to knock in Misco. Taipale and White executed a perfect double-steal to advance into scoring position and Katie Wilkie brought them both home with a 2 RBI single up the middle.

With a 4-0 lead all the Yellowjackets had to do was hold on and they did that. Wooster was able to get one run back in the bottom of the first, but the Yellowjackets got the run back in the top of the third when Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) laced a double up the middle to drive in White. Wooster cut the lead back down to three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Patrick came through again, this time knocking in Taipale on a single up the middle. Wooster would score one run in the sixth, but it proved to be too little, too late as the Yellowjackets held on for the victory.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets in this game, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three in 4.2 innings pitched. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) relieved Hendrickson and pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit while striking out five. Hendrickson got the win, her second of the day, to move to 4-1 on the season.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (8-4, 0-0 UMAC) will be back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 16 when they take on Suffolk University and Kenyon College. Game times from Ft. Myers, Fla. are set for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
