Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket baseball team was back in action Thursday to take on Macalester. The Yellowjackets were looking to build some momentum following their first win of the season the night before.

Macalester 9, Yellowjackets 6
Box Score

Things looked good in the early going in the first game against Macalester, as the Yellowjackets built an early lead.

With one out in the top of the second and Jake Irlbeck (Centerville, Minn./Centennial) on first, Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) came through for the Yellowajckets, lacing an RBI triple to right field. Colin Welch (Acton, Calif./Golden Valley) then executed a perfect squeeze play to knock in Patko as the Yellowjackets took a 2-1 lead.

The Yellowjackets would score two more in the top of the third to push the lead to 4-1. With one out and the bases loaded Welch hit into a fielder's choice that scored Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) from third. Irlbeck then scored when Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) hit a fly ball that the right fielder misplayed putting runners on first and third with two outs. The Yellowjackets were unable to do any more damage in the half-inning as Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West) grounded out to end the threat.

The Yellowjackets unraveled in the bottom half of the third, as Macalester would score six runs, sending 11 batters to the plate before the inning was over. Macalester would score one run in each the fourth and the fifth as their lead grew to 9-4.

Things got interesting in the top of the seventh as the Yellowjackets were looking to complete the comeback. The first three Yellowjackets to come to the plate in the inning all walked. Following a Patko strikeout, Michael Osterman (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena Vista) came in to pinch hit and got hit by a pitch to score Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech). Wage then hit a sacrifice fly to score Miller to cut the deficit to 9-6. Osness singled to load the bases with two outs, but Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) grounded out to second base to end the rally.

Richard Vanden Branden (Neenah, Wis./Saint Mary Central) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing eight runs (seven earned) one eight hits while striking out one in three-plus innings pitched. Boone Elkins (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) relieved Vanden Branden, allowing one run on three hits while striking out one in the final three innings. Vanden Branden took the loss and falls to 0-2 on the season

Macalester 9, Yellowjackets 7
Box Score

Just like in the earlier game, the Yellowjackets jumped out to an early lead in this one.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the first, Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) grounded into a double-play to score Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) from third. Two batters later Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) hit a single up the middle to score Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) as the Yellowjackets took an early 2-0 lead.

After giving up one run in the top of the second, the Yellowjackets pushed another run across in the bottom half of the inning. Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) opened the inning with a double down the right field line. Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West) then was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. McNosky and Pitts both advanced a base when Pitts grounded out. With two outs Thomas and Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) drew back-to-back walks to score McNosky as the Yellowjackets held a 3-1 lead after two innings.

Things got ugly in the top of the fourth, as Macalester scored five runs while sending nine batters to the plate to take a 6-3 lead. The Yellowjackets would get one back in their half of the fourth, but Macalester would score one more in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 9-5 lead after six.

As they had in the first game, the Yellowjackets put on a rally to end the game. Osness hit a two-out single to keep the Yellowjackets alive. Pitts then singled to advance Osness to put two runners on. The next batter up was Patko and he got a hold of one, sending a triple to right field to score Pitts and Osness. Unfortunately Miller flied out to center field to end the threat.

Brock McDermid (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing seven runs on 13 hits while striking out two in five innings. Tanner Gilmore (Alta Loma, Calif./Alta Loma) came in to relieve McDermid, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out one in two innings. McDermid took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (1-7, 0-0 UMAC) is the final game of their spring trip when they take on Colby College on Saturday, March 19. The first game of the double header is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
