Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjackets softball team was in action Thurday to continue their Florida spring trip. Having split the previous night, the Yellowjackets were looking for a sweep on their second-to-last day of the trip.

Yellowjackets 12, Curry College 3
Box Score

The first game of the day pitted the Yellowjackets against Curry College, and things could not have gone better for them.

Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) really got things going for the Yellowjackets early. After reaching on an error Thomfohrda stole second and third. Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee) then walked to put runners on the corners with no outs. Shipman and Thomfohrda then executed a perfect double-steal to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

The next batter up was Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), and she displayed her power in this matchup, crushing a two-run homerun to give the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead. The Yellowjackets would push another run across before the inning was out when Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) hit a sacrifice fly to score Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) from third.

Both teams would score in the second before the Yellowjackets put the game out of reach in the third. With one out and two runners in scoring position, Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) came through for the Yellowjackets, hitting a two-RBI single that would score Patrick and Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo). Gidley would advance all the way to third on the play to put another runner in scoring position. Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) then knocked in Gidley before Thomfohrda hit a triple to put the Yellowjackets up 9-1. The Yellowjackets would score one more run on a Taipale single to hold a 10-1 lead after the top of the third.

The Yellowjackets would score two more runs in the top of the fourth, before Curry pushed two across in the bottom of the fifth, as the Yellowjackets cruised to a 12-3 victory.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing one run (none earned) on five hits while striking out two in 4.1 innings pitched. The effort on the rubber gave Hendrickson her team-leading sixth win of the year.

Saint Joseph 5, Yellowjackets 4
Box Score

The second game of the day was not as easy for the Yellowjackets.

Saint Joseph jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, and led 4-0 as the Yellowjackets entered the bottom half of the seventh inning.

The wild half-inning saw the Yellowjackets score four unearned runs to tie the game at 4-4. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) started the rally when she reached on a fielding error by the Saint Joseph shortstop. Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) then hit one at the shortstop, and once again it was booted as the Yellowjackets had runners on first and second with one out.

Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) then singled to load the bases before Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee) ripped a double to left field scoring Hanson and Fjeran. Thomfohrda and Shipman then both scored on a throwing error by the Saint Joseph catcher.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, Saint Joseph was able to score in the top of the eight to take a 5-4 lead. The Yellowjackets were able to get a runner to third with one out, but Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) popped out to the pitcher and Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) grounded out to second base to end the threat, as the Yellowjackets fell to Saint Joseph.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) took the loss in the game for the Yellowjackets, allowing five runs (three earned) on 12 hits while striking out two in the complete game effort. Hendrickson falls to 6-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets (10-6, 0-0 UMAC) wrap up their spring trip tomorrow, Friday, March 18, when they take on Castleton University and UMass-Dartmouth. Game times from Ft. Myers, Fla. are set for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
