Yellowjackets Win First of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket baseball team was back in action Wednesday. Taking on the University of Dubuque and Carleton College, the Yellowjackets looked to break out of the early season funk they have been in and take home a victory or two.

Dubuque 9, Yellowjackets 5 (10 innings)
Box Score

The first game of the day saw the Yellowjackets take on the University of Dubuque, and things did not look good early.

Dubuque scored two runs to open the game, as the Yellowjackets found themselves down 2-0 before they had even come up to bat. The Yellowjackets were able to get one back in the bottom of the third when Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) hit a two-out single to drive home Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) from second base.

Dubuque answered right back in the top of the fourth, thanks to some timely hitting and errors on the Yellowjackets. By the end of the half inning the Yellowjackets found themselves facing a 5-1 deficit.

The Yellowjackets refused to give up, as they brought two across in the bottom of the fifth. Patko hit a leadoff triple in the inning and was brought home on a Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) single. Pitts then singled and stole second before being drove in on a Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) two-out single, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

The Yellowjackets were able to get one back in both the seventh and the eight, as they erased the deficit to tie the game at 5-5.

Unfortunately, Yellowjacket starter Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor), who had pitched all nine innings up to that point, ran out of gas in the 10th. It took three Yellowjacket pitchers to get out of the half inning, but the damage had already been done as Dubuque scored four in the half inning to go up 9-5. The Yellowjackets were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the 10th as they fell to Dubuque.

Lewis finished with 9.2 innings pitched, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 13 hits while striking out one. He falls to 0-2 on the season.

Box Score

The second game of the day played out much more to the Yellowjackets favor, as they scored early and often en route to their first victory of the season.

Michael Osterman (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena Vista) showed some clutch two-out hitting for the Yellowjackets in the top of the first. Osterman came up to bat with the bases loaded and two outs before ripping a double to score Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) and Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech). Carleton would score two in the bottom of the second to tie the game up at 2-2.

The Yellowjackets broke the game open in the top of the second, scoring seven runs and sending 11 batters to the plate. Thomas gave the Yellowjackets a 4-2 lead when he hit a two-out 2-run homerun. Miller then hit a double and Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) followed that up with a single to put runners on the corners. Miller then scored on a wild pitch to give the Yellowjackets a 5-2 lead. Osterman, Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West), and Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior), and Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West) then laced together back-to-back-to-back-to-back singles to score three more runs, as the Yellowjackets took a 9-2 lead.

The Yellowjackets would score three more in the fourth inning and one in the ninth to defeat Carlton College 13-3.

Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) got the victory for the Yellowjackets in this one. Schneider allowed three runs (two earned) on 10 hits while striking out seven in seven innings. Brady Stocker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) pitched the final two innings, giving up no runs while striking out four. Schneider is now 1-0 on the season.
