Friday marked the final day of the spring trip for the Yellowjacket softball team. It has been a successful spring thus far for the Yellowjackets, as they entered the Friday with a 9-3 record in Florida. They would look to make it 11-3 as they took on Castleton University and UMass Dartmouth.

Yellowjackets 6, Castleton 3
Box Score

The First game of the day saw the Yellowjackets take on Castleton University.

After allowing a run in the bottom of the third, the Yellowjackets offense broke through in the top of the fifth. Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) doubled and then was driven in when Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) doubled. Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee) hit a single to bring home Thomfohrda to make it 2-1 Yellowjackets. Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) then displayed her power by crushing a 2-run home run to put the Yellowjackets up 4-1. Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) then hit a double and was driven in by a Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) single as the Yellowjackets exited the half inning with a 5-2 lead.

Things got a little hairy for the Yellowjackets in the bottom half of the inning, as Castleton opened the inning with back-to-back triples and a double to cut the Yellowjacket lead to 5-3. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) was then brought in to stop the bleeding and did she ever answer the call. Hanson struck out the side to preserve the two-run lead.

The Yellowjackets would score an insurance run in the top of the seventh as they defeated Castleton 6-3.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out five in four innings to earn her seventh win of the season. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) pitched the final three innings, striking out six to earn the save.

UMass Dartmouth 6, Yellowjackets 4
Box Score

The second game of the day featured the Yellowjackets and UMass Dartmouth, as the Yellowjackets looked to end their Florida trip on a high note.

UMass Dartmouth struck first in this matchup, as they managed to push a run across in the bottom of the second.

The Yellowjackets were able to get the run back in the tip of the fifth, as Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) continued her hot start to the season with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo).

UMass Dartmouth struck right back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs to retake the lead. They would score three more in the bottom of the sixth as the Yellowjackets found themselves down 6-1 going into the top of the seventh.

The Yellowjackets used the top of the seventh to stage a furious comeback. With the bases loaded and one out, Thomfohrda hit another sacrifice fly to score Wilke and advance Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) and Shelby Gerken (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) into scoring position. Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee) then laced a double down the left field like to score Fjeran and Gerken, cutting the deficit to 6-4. Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) walked to put the tying run on base, but Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) struck out swinging to end the threat as the Yellowjackets fell to UMass Dartmouth.

White took the loss in this one, allowing six runs on 13 hits while striking out three in the complete-game effort. She is now 2-1 on the season.

The Yellowjackets (11-7, 0-0 UMAC) now have two weeks off before opening up UMAC play on Saturday, April 2 when they play host Martin Luther College in a double header. The first game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
