Yellowjackets Split on Final Day in Arizona

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The 2015-16 season has not started out quite the way the Yellowjackets baseball team had hoped. The Yellowjackets have been competitive against some tough competition, but ultimately tended to be undone by one bad inning.

They would look to reverse that trend on their final day in Arizona as they took on Colby College in a double header.

Yellowjackets 5, Colby 4
Box Score

Things did not look good in the early going of game one for the Yellowjackets. Colby had runners on the corners with two outs, but Yellowjacket starter Luke Hardisty (Millington, Ill./Sandwich) was unable to escape the jam, giving up back-to-back RBI singles to give Colby a 2-0 lead. The damage could have been worse, but the Yellowjackets got Colby's Dan Csaplar into a rundown to end the half inning.

The Yellowjackets tied up the game an inning and a half later thanks to some clutch two-out hitting. With Michael Osterman (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena Vista) and Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) on second and third, Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) came up to bat. Pitts continued his hot start to the season, knocking in Osterman and Bellin with a single to tie the game at 2-2.

It didn't take long for Colby to retake the lead back from the Yellowjackets. Hardisty gave up a leadoff triple to open the top of the third, and two batters later the go-ahead run was scored on a sacrifice fly. Hardisty was able to limit the damage thanks to a pair of fielder's choice ground outs to end the inning.

The Yellowjackets were able to take their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the third. With runners on second and third Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) hit a grounder to the Colby shortstop that was misplayed allowing Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) to score the tying run. Two batters later Bellin hit an RBI single that score Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) as the Yellowjackets took a 4-3 lead after three innings.

Colby would tie the game up one more time in the top of the fifth thanks to a defensive mishap by the Yellowjackets. Following a leadoff single, Colby hit a grounder toward Bellin. Bellin misplayed the ball allowing both runners to reach on a potential double-play situation. Two batters later Colby knocked in the tying run on a sacrifice fly to knot the game up at 4-4.

The Yellowjackets wasted little time regaining the lead. Osterman led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and then was moved to third on a Bellin sacrifice bunt. Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West) then hit one at the Colby shortstop, who misplayed the ball allowing Osterman to score. The Yellowjackets would not score another run in the inning, but the damage had been done as they held a 5-4 lead after five innings.

After Hardisty gave up a leadoff walk to open the top of the sixth, Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) came in to wrap up the inning. Lewis proceeded to get the next six Colby batters out as he preserved the win for his first career save. Hardisty earned the win and is now 1-1 on the season.

Colby 15, Yellowjackets 7
Box Score

The final game of the Arizona trip did not play out quite the way the Yellowjackets had planned.

Colby scored four runs in the bottom of the second of Yellowjacket starter Boone Elkins (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) as the Yellowjackets once again found themselves in an early hole.

The Yellowjackets would cut the deficit to one in the top of the third thanks to a Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) sacrifice fly and a Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) 2-RBI triple.

Curry would go on to score four more in the bottom of the third to chase Elkins after 2.2 innings pitched. The Yellowjackets would get two back in the top of the fourth thanks to RBI singles by Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel), but it would not be enough as Colby would go on to score three runs in the fourth and two in both the fifth and sixth to defeat the Yellowjackets 15-7.

Elkins took the loss in the game, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits in 2.2 innings pitched. He is now 0-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets (2-8, 0-0 UMAC) will be back in action Wednesday, March 30 when they travel to St. Paul, Minn. for a double header against Macalester College. The first game is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
