Yellowjackets Take Two from Northland

The Yellowjacket softball team opened up their stretch of 10 games in six days Thursday afternoon taking on conference foe Northland College in Ashland, Wis. The Yellowjackets were looking to build off of their weekend sweep against Martin Luther College and move to 4-0 in UMAC play.

Yellowjackets 9, Northland 1 (6 innings)

The first game of the day went about as well as the Yellowjackets could have hoped.

With two outs in the first and Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) at second, Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) came through with an RBI double. White would then advance to third and score on a pair of wild pitches to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead after one inning.

The runs kept coming in the top of the second when Taipale singled to drive in Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) and Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors). White then knocked in her third run of the game on a grounder that the shortstop misplayed, as the Yellowjackets had a 5-0 run after the top of the second.

The Yellowjackets would score once more in the fourth and three times in the sixth, before allowing one back in the sixth as they defeated Northland 9-1. The Yellowjackets were aided in this victory by seven Northland errors throughout the course of the game.

That would prove to be more than enough run support, as Yellowjacket starter Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) made quick work of the Northland hitters. Hanson pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and one run while striking out 14 without a walk. Hanson is now 3-2 on the season.

Yellowjackets 14, Northland 5 (6 innings)

The second game of the day did not start out quite the way the Yellowjackets would have liked.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start and got into some trouble early, giving up singles to the first two batters. It looked as though Hendrickson may get out of the jam as she was able to get two outs on a lineout to the shortstop that caught the lead runner off of third. Unfortunately, this was not the case as she gave up a single before Bethany Best hit a 3-run home run to give the Lumberjills a 3-0 lead after one inning.

That lead was short lived, as the Yellowjacket bats came alive in the top of the second. Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) opened up the scoring with a double that scored Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo). Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) then hit a double to score Misco. Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) then singled in Fjeran before Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) turned on one to hit her team-leading fifth homerun of the year. The 3-run homerun capped the scoring in the inning as the Yellowjackets turned a three run deficit into a 6-1 lead.

The Yellowjackets would score one in the third, four in the fifth, and three in the sixth as they turned what started out as a close game into a 14-5 route.

Hendrickson got the start, and the win, for the Yellowjackets, allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out five in five innings pitched. Hendrickson is now 9-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets (15-7, 4-0 UMAC) now have a day off before traveling to St. Bonifacius, Minn. to take on Crown College. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
