Miller, Mattson Power Yellowjackets in Sweep of Morris

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Saturday afternoon saw the Yellowjacket baseball team take the field at Ted Whereatt Field for the first time in the 2015-16 season. The Yellowjackets took on UMAC foe Minnesota Morris, as they looked to sweep in their long-awaited home opener.

Yellowjackets 11, Minnesota Morris 1 (8 Innings)

The first game of the day came down to one monster inning for the Yellowjackets.

After what started out as a pitcher's duel for the first two innings, the Yellowjacket offense blew the game wide open in the bottom half of the third, plating 10 runs in the half inning.

Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West) opened up the door with a single to left center that scored Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) hit a double down the right field line to score Osness and Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior). Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) then hit a single down the third base line to score Pitts, making the game 4-0 in favor of the Yellowjackets. Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) followed that up with a double to center field that knocked in Cuello and Bellin. Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) then hit a double of his own to knock in Thomas, giving the Yellowjackets a 7-0 lead.

After Miller advanced to third on a balk, Patko hit one that the shortstop misplayed, allowing Miller to score. Mattson then put the icing on the cake, as he launched a 2-run homerun over the centerfield wall to put the Yellowjackets up 10-0 after three innings.

Morris would get one run back in the top of the fourth, but this game was all Yellowjackets, as they cruised to an 11-1 victory.

Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) started for the Yellowjackets, allowing one run on five hits while walking two and striking out nine in the complete-game effort. Schneider is now 3-0 on the season.

Yellowjackets 12, Minnesota Morris 1 (7 Innings)

The second game of the double header played out eerily similar to the first.

Morris scratched one run across in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead, but as they had in the first game, the Yellowjackets offense would explode in the bottom of the third.

Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior) and Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West) opened the inning with back-to-back singles. The Yellowjackets then went for small ball, as Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) laid down a bunt that the Morris pitcher misplayed, allowing Mattson to score and Osness to move to third with none out. Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) then hit a single to right field to score Osness, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead. Pitts followed that up by stealing home to give the Yellowjackets a 3-1 lead.

The biggest damage came from Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna), who teed up a pitch to launch his team-leading third homerun over the center field wall. The 3-run shot gave the Yellowjackets a 6-1 lead.

Following a Cougar pitching change, Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) reached first on an error by the Morris shortstop, and proceed to steal both second and third. Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) then hit a ball toward the shortstop that was misplayed, allowing Wage to score. Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior) then hit a double to put runners on second and third with one out. Osness then hit a sacrifice fly to score Patko, as the Yellowjackets held an 8-1 lead after three innings.

The Yellowjackets would go on to score three more in the fourth and one in the sixth en route to their 12-1 victory over the Cougars.

Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing one run on two hits while walking two and striking out six. Lewis, who finished with a complete game, is now 2-2 on the season.
The Yellowjackets (7-8, 5-0 UMAC) will be back in action Sunday, April 17 when they play host to Northland College. First pitch from Ted Whereatt Field is set for 1:30 p.m.
