Shipman’s Four Hits Help Lead Yellowjackets Past Crown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Saturday afternoon marked the beginning of a stretch of eight games in four days for the Yellowjacket softball team. Traveling to St. Bonifacius, Minn. to take on Crown College, the Yellowjackets were looking to start this stretch out on a positive note.

Yellowjackets 6, Crown 4 (10 Innings)

The first game of the day proved to be about as exciting as a game can be.

The Yellowjackets were able to strike first in this one thanks to a throwing error by the Crown pitcher that allowed Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) to advance to second. Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) made the Storm pay for their defensive lapse, singling to center field to score Fjeran and give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjacket lead got pushed to 2-0 in the top of the sixth. Thomfohrda led off the inning with a single and then came around to score two batters later when Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) ripped a triple down the right field line.

Crown came back in a big way in the bottom of the sixth, opening the half inning with three straight singles to cut the Yellowjacket lead to 2-1. Crown would then take a 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly and an error by Yellowjacket pitcher Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg).

The bottom third of the order then came through for the Yellowjackets in the top of the seventh, as Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) hit a one-out single before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error by the Crown centerfielder. Fjeran then laced a single to right field to score Wilke, as the Yellowjackets managed to tie the game up at 3-3.

Hanson sat Crown down in order in the bottom of the seventh, meaning this game would be decided in extra innings. It took until the 10th inning, but the Yellowjacket offense was finally able to break through. The Yellowjackets were able to break the tie thanks to back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from Shipman, Taipale, and Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes).

Crown would score one run in the bottom of the 10th, but the Yellowjackets would prevail in game one 6-4

Hanson got the start in this one, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out eight in eight innings. Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) came in to pitch the final two innings, allowing one run (none earned) on two hits to earn her team-leading 10th victory of the season.

Yellowjackets 6, Crown 2

The second game of the double-header saw the Yellowjackets jump out to an early lead.

Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) opened up the scoring for the Yellowjackets with a single to left field to score Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee). Two batters later, Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) hit a single to right field to score Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), giving the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead after the top half of the first.

The Yellowjackets would score two more in the top of the third. White continued her strong sophomore season with a double to left center to score Shipman. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) then hit a double to left center to knock in White, giving the Yellowjackets a 4-0 lead.

Crown would get one back in the bottom of the fourth, but Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) would rip a 2-run homerun over the left field fence to put the Yellowjackets up 6-1 going into the last half inning. Crown did manage to score a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little, too late as the Yellowjackets won 6-2.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) started the second game for the Yellowjackets, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out three in the complete game effort. The victory, Hendrickson's second of the day, moves her to 11-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets (17-7, 6-0 UMAC) will be back in action Sunday, April 17 when they travel to Eau Claire, Wis. to take on UW-Whitewater in a neutral-site game. The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
