Miller, Patko Hit Two Home Runs Each as Yellowjackets Sweep Finlandia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Weather would not stop the Yellowjacket baseball team from getting in a pair of games against Finlandia on Monday afternoon. With high temperatures barely reaching 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the Yellowjackets and Lions faced off in a double header, with the Yellowjackets looking to improve on their winning streak.

Yellowjackets 7, Finlandia 4

The first game of the afternoon turned into an eventful affair.

Finlandia opened up the game with three runs off of Yellowjacket starter Luke Hardisty (Millington, Ill./Sandwich). The cold may have been playing a factor for the Yellowjacket defense, as they committed two uncharacteristic errors in the inning.

Despite trailing before ever stepping up to bat, the Yellowjackets kept their cool on a cold day in Superior. With runners on second and third with one out, Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) shot a fly ball to right field that scored Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel). Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) then hit a ball at the shortstop that was misplayed, allowing Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) to score and advancing Wage to second. Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) then came through with a single up the middle to score Wage from second, tying the score up at 3-3.

The Yellowajckets took the lead in the bottom of the second when Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior) led off with a ground-rule double. Mattson advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw from the Finlandia pitcher before Pitts hit a single through the right side to knock in the go-ahead run.

Finlandia would tie the game up at 4-4 in the top of the fourth thanks to a pair of 2-out errors by the Yellowjackets. This tie was short lived, as they would score two in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-4.

The Yellowjackets would add an insurance run in the fifth, as Hardisty settled down after the first inning, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts in six innings.

Tyler Kronstedt (Andover, Minn./Andover) came in to pitch the seventh. He ran into a little trouble, putting runners on first and second with one out. He got the next batter to fly out to right field before striking out the last batter to earn his first career save.

Yellowjackets 26, Finlandia 0

The second game of the afternoon did not play out as close as the first one.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to the lead quickly as Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly), giving the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead after one.
Following a quick top of the second, the Yellowjackets bats exploded in their half of the inning, as they sent 12 batters to the plate. Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) displayed his impressive power, as he opened the inning with a home run before hitting a 2-run shot his second time around. By the time the inning was completed the Yellowjackets had scored eight runs to go up 9-0.

The Yellowjackets would bat around again in the fifth and sixth, but this time it was Miller who showed off his power, hitting a 3-run shot in the fifth to push the Yellowjacket lead to 14-0 before launching a 2-run shot in the sixth. By the time it was all said-and-done, the Yellowjackets had defeated the Lions by a final score of 26-0.

Jonah Lundequam (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland) got the start in this game, pitching six innings of one-hit ball. Brady Stocker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) came in to finish the game, striking out two in a perfect seventh inning.

Patko finished the game 3-3 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored. Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) also went 3-3 with three runs scored, while Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) and Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West) had three hits and two RBIs a piece. Miller finished 3-5 with two home runs, four runs scored, and an absured nine RBIs.

The Yellowjackets (10-8, 6-0 UMAC) will be back in action Wednesday, April 20 when they play host to rival St. Scholastica. The first pitch from Ted Whereatt Field is set for 1:30 p.m.
