White’s Home Run Not Enough as Yellowjackets Fall to Northwestern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket softball team hit the road Tuesday, as they headed to St. Paul, Minn. to take on the University of Northwestern. This pair of games was particularly important as the Yellowjackets held a narrow lead over the Eagles in the conference standings.

Northwestern 3, Yellowjackets 2 (8 innings)

The Yellowjackets put their power on display early in the first game. With two outs and one runner on, Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) turned on a pitch, launching it over the leftfield wall to put the Yellowjackets up 2-0 in the top of the first.

Northwestern would get one back in the third, as Yellowjacket starter Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) issued a bases-loaded walk with two outs. Hanson was able to limit the damage, as she got the next Eagle batter to fly out to centerfield.

The Eagles were able to tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth. Northwestern opened the inning with back-to-back singles, with both runners advancing on a passed ball. The Eagles number nine hitter then hit a fly ball to centerfield to score the game tying run.

Hanson was relieved in the seventh by Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), who quickly found herself in a one-out bases-loaded jam. She was able to pitch her way out of it, as the Yellowjackets would go into extra innings.

The Yellowjackets were able to get a runner into scoring position in the top of the eight, as they looked to retake the lead. Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) hit a one-out single before stealing second base. Hendrickson then popped out to third base before Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) drew a walk to bring White up to the plate. Unfortunately, White grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

Northwestern would finish the game in walk off fashion, as they strung together an infield single and a double to right center with one out to defeat the Yellowjackets 3-2.

Hanson pitched six full innings for the Yellowjackets, allowing two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out three. Hendrickson pitch the final 1.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out one. Hendrickson took the loss to fall to 12-4 on the season.

Northwestern 4, Yellowjackets 1

It was one big inning that was able to do the Yellowjackets in in the second game of the day, as they ended up getting swept by Northwestern.

The Eagles took the first lead of the game, as they strung together three straight two-out singles to go up 1-0 after the third inning.

The Yellowjackets would strike right back in this matchup. Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) reached on a one-out error, before Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) hit a double to center field to put runners on second and third with one out. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) then reached on an error to score Taipale. White also tried to score on the play, but got caught in a rundown, as the Yellowjackets and Eagles were tied up at 1-1 after the top of the fourth.

Unfortunately, it all unraveled for the Yellowjackets in the bottom of the fifth, as Northwestern would score three two-out runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Yellowjackets were only able to muster one hit the rest of the way, as they fell to the Eagles 4-1.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets in the second game, allowing four runs on six hits while walking one and striking out one in the complete game effort. Hendrickson is now 12-5 on the season.

The Yellowjackets (17-11, 6-2 UMAC) will be back in action Friday, April 22 when they play host to rival St. Scholastica. First pitch from Liebaert Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
