Yellowjackets Split the Bridge-Battle

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Friday afternoon the Yellowjackets softball team was finally able to get some playable weather, as they played host to rival St. Scholastica in their home opener. This matchup was particularly important because the Yellowjackets are fighting for position in the UMAC standings.

St. Scholastica 9, Yellowjackets 3

The first game of the day started out a little rough for the Yellowjackets.

The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the Yellowjackets home opener before the home team even got a chance to bat. St. Scholastica's offensive outburst was aided by the fact that the Yellowjackets had two outfield errors in the opening inning.

St. Scholastica would score two more runs in the top of the second before the Yellowjackets bats were finally able to break through. With the bases loaded, Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) drew a walk to score Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) and cut the Yellowjacket deficit to 5-1. Michayla Grahek (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) then hit a fly ball to right field that scored Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) to cut the deficit to 5-2 after the second inning.

The Saints blew the game open in the fifth inning when Rendi Johnson sent a 3-run blast over the left field wall to push the St. Scholastica lead to 9-2. The Yellowjackets were able to get one back in the bottom of the fifth on Patrick's single through the left side, but the deficit proved to be too much as the Yellowjackets fell 9-3 in game one.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets, pitching the first and seventh inning. Hendrickson gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out one. Kayla Hartl (Medford, Wis./Medford Area) pitched the middle five innings for the Yellowjackets, allowing six runs on seven hits while walking two.

Hendrickson took the loss to fall to 12-6 on the season.

Yellowjackets 4, St. Scholastica 1

After dropping the first game, the Yellowjackets desperately needed a win in the second game to maintain their standings in the conference.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) came out after a rough first game and pitched a gem for the Yellowjackets as they defeated St. Scholastica 4-1 to salvage the series split.

It was one big inning that carried the Yellowjackets offensively in this matchup, as they scored all four of their runs in the fourth.

Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) opened the inning with a double to the right field fence. Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) then hit a single up the middle to put runners on the corners with no outs. Two batters later Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) shot a single to center field to score Taipale. White and Misco then executed a double-steal to put runners on second and third with one out. Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) once again came through on the offensive end, as she ripped a single through the right side to score White. Two batters later Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) shot a single up the middle to score Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) and Misco as the Yellowjackets held a 4-0 lead after four innings.

That was all the offense that Hendrickson would need, as she limited St. Scholastica to five hits and one run over the final three innings.

Hendrickson allowed only one run on six hits, while walking one and striking out one in the complete-game effort. She improves to 13-6 on the season.

The Yellowjackets (18-12, 7-3 UMAC) will be back in action Saturday, April 23 when they play host to Bethany Lutheran College. First pitch from Liebaert Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
