Millers' Two Home Run Day Leads Yellowjackets past Crown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Saturday afternoon, the Yellowjackets baseball team traveled to Waconia, Minn. to take on Crown College. This game marked the first leg of a four-game two-day road trip for the Yellowjackets, so they were looking to start things off on the right note.

Yellowjackets 7, Crown 3

The Yellowjackets and Crown found themselves in a heated battle to open the first game.

It was the Yellowjackets who struck first, as Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) hit an infield single, before stealing second and later scoring on a Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) sacrifice fly to center field. The run gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead after the top of the fifth.

Crown would find some offense of their own in the bottom of the half inning, as they laced together three straight two-out hits to take a 2-1 lead.

The Yellowjackets would get one back in the top of the sixth as Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) hit a double down the right field line to open the inning. Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) then hit a single to center field to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Two batters later, Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Bellin and tie the game up at 2-2.

Crown would retake the lead 3-2 after the bottom of the fifth, but the lead would be short lived as the Yellowjackets tacked on four runs in the seventh. Pitts tied the game up for the Yellowjackets with a single up the middle to score Patko. After Pitts advanced to second on a groundout, Thomas hit a single down the leftfield line to give the Yellowjackets a 4-3 lead. Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) capped off the inning by ripping a pitch over the left field wall for his sixth home run of the season, as the Yellowjackets took a 6-3 lead after seven innings.

The Yellowjackets would tack an insurance run on in the ninth, as they defeated Crown 7-3.

Brock McDermid (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out two in six innings to earn his second straight victory. Boone Elkins (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) came in to relieve McDermid, allowing two hits while striking out one to earn his second save of the year.

Yellowjackets 5, Crown 2

Game two of the day saw the Yellowjackets face an early deficit, as Crown scored a quick run thanks to a pair of Yellowjacket errors to go up 1-0 after three innings.

The Yellowjackets would get one back in the top of the fourth, as Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) hit a solo home run over the leftfield fence for his team-leading seventh of the season, and second of the day.

The Yellowjackets were then able to take the lead in the top of the fifth. Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) singled to center field, which scored Tyler Evans (Andover, Minn./Andover) from second. Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) then hit an infield single, allowing Pitts to go all the way to third on the throw. Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) then hit a ball down the line that the third baseman misplayed, allowing Pitts to score. Miller then drove in Bellin with a single through the left side as the Yellowjackets took a 4-1 lead after the top of the fifth.

Crown would score once in the sixth to cut the Yellowjacket lead to 4-2. The Yellowjackets would score one in the top of the seventh to push their lead back to three runs at 5-2. The score would stay that way the rest of the game as the Yellowjackets swept Crown.

Richard Vanden Branden (Neenah, Wis./Saint Mary Central) started for the Yellowjackets, allowing one run (none earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out one in three innings pitched. He was relieved by Brady Stocker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls), who allowed one run (none earned) on three hits while walking one and striking out two over the final six innings to earn his first collegiate victory.

The Yellowjackets (12-10, 8-2 UMAC) now head to St. Paul, Minn. to take on Hamline University. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
