Comebacks Fall Short as Yellowjackets Drop a Pair to Northwestern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket baseball team was in action Tuesday afternoon as they headed to St. Paul, Minn. to take on the University of Northwestern in a pair of key UMAC games. A pair of wins against the Eagles and the Yellowjackets would have moved into a tie for second in the conference.

Northwestern 11, Yellowjackets 9

The Yellowjackets quickly found themselves behind in the first game, as they were forced to mount a furious rally.

Northwestern scored one in the first, four in the third, and three in each the fourth and fifth, as the Yellowjackets found themselves down 11-2. Despite the early deficit, the Yellowjackets refused to bow down.

With one down and two runners on in the seventh, Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) came up to bat and ripped a triple down the line to score Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) and Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna), cutting the Northwestern lead to 11-4. Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) then drove in Cuello to cut the deficit to 11-5. The next batter up was Jake Irlbeck (Centerville, Minn./Centennial), who sent a double to leftfield to score Patko, cutting the deficit to 11-6.

Following an Eagles pitching change, Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West). Osness came through, sending a double to leftfield to score Irlbeck and put runners on second and third with one out. Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) then hit into an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 11-8. Unfortunately the rally would end there, as Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Yellowjackets would attempt a second rally in the eighth inning, as they loaded the bases with one out. Irlbeck then hit into a fielder's choice to drive in Miller, cutting the deficit to 11-9 after eight innings.

The offense nearly came through in the ninth, as Thomas hit a double to left center and Miller was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two outs. The comeback was not meant to be, as Cuello ended up grounding out to third to end the game.

Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits while walking one and striking out one in three-plus innings pitched. Boone Elkins (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) relieved Lewis, allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three in the final five innings.

Lewis took the loss to fall to 2-4 on the season.

Northwestern 6, Yellowjackets 3

Northwestern opened up game two by scoring in each of the first five innings, as they took a 6-1 lead.

The early deficit once again forced the Yellowjackets to attempt a rally as they tried to avoid the sweep.

Things got started in the seventh inning, as Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) drew a walk to open the inning. Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior) then laced a single to left field to score Cuello, who had advanced to second on a throwing error from the Eagles pitcher. Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) then hit a single through the left side to put runners on first and second with one out. The Yellowjackets were unable to score another run however, as the next two batters were retired.

The Yellowjackets would attempt one more rally in the top of the ninth. Cuello led off the inning with a double to left field. He then advanced to third on a deep fly to center field, before being driven in on a groundout from Mattson. Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) then reached on an error by the Northwestern shortstop before Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) hit a double to right field to put runners on second and third with two outs. Tyler Evans (Andover, Minn./Andover) drew a pinch hit walk, but Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) grounded into a fielder's choice to end the rally and the game for the Yellowjackets.

Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits while walking three and striking out two in seven innings pitched. Jonah Lundequam (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland) relieved Schneider, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.

Schneider took the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets (12-12, 8-4 UMAC) will head back down to St. Paul, Minn. on Thursday, April 28 as they take on Hamline University. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
