Yellowjackets Sweep Minnesota Morris

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjackets softball team was in action Friday as they took on UMAC foe Minnesota Morris. After two rain delays these two teams were finally able to play, as the weather finally cooperated.

The Yellowjackets quickly found themselves in a hole in the first game, as the Cougars put two runs up on the board before the Yellowjackets even had a chance to bat.

The Yellowjackets answered right back in their half of the first. Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) hit a lead-off double to left center and moved over on a sacrifice-bunt from Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo). Following a Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) walk, Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) came up to bat. White came through for the Yellowjackets, lacing a double to right center to score Thomforhrda and Taipale.

The Yellowjackets took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. Wilke led off with a double to right center before Taipale hit a single to center field to put the Yellowjackets up 3-2. Then with two runners on Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) shot a single to right center to put the Yellowjackets up 4-2.

The Yellowjackets would score three more runs in the fourth to build a 7-2 lead. With one out and runners on second and third, Wilke shot a single to right center that scored Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior). Taipale then cleared the bases with a single to right field that scored Michayla Grahek (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and Wilke.

The Yellowjackets would score one more in the fifth and two more in the sixth, as they defeated the Cougars 10-2 in game one.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing two runs on eight hits in the complete game effort. Hendrickson improves to 15-6 on the season with the victory.

The second game got started with a boom for the Yellowjackets.

Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) launched her team and conference-leading eight home run of the year over the center field fence to give the Yellowjackets an early 2-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets would tack on another un in the second, as Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) raced home on a wild pitch to give the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead.

Minnesota Morris would get one back in the top of the third but it proved to be too little, too late, as the Yellowjackets would score two more in the fifth, giving more than enough run support for starter Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld).

Hendrickson pitched another complete-game gem in game two, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out four. She allowed only one Cougar baserunner over the final four frames to earn her team and conference-leading 16th victory of the year.

The Yellowjackets (22-12, 11-3 UMAC) will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 30, when they take on North Central University to wrap up the regular season. First pitch from Minneapolis, Minn is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
