Yellowjackets Fall to Simpson in the NCAA Tournament

Box Score

Simpson 5, Yellowjackets 0

The Yellowjackets softball team was back in action Saturday afternoon, as they took on Simpson College in the in the elimination game in the NCAA Regionals. With this potentially being the last game of the year, the Yellowjackets were looking to see if they could make some noise at the regional and extend their season.

Things did not get going quite the way the Yellowjackets would have liked. Simpson scored one run in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the second as the Yellowjackets looked to climb out of an early hole.

The Yellowjackets had some prime opportunities over the course of the game to tie it up. In the third inning the Yelllowjackets put runners on first and third with two outs and failed to score. In the second inning they had runners on first and third with nobody out. Unfortunately they were unable to score in that situation as they hit into a double play before the final batter of the inning popped out.

A golden opportunity to tie the game up happened in the top of the sixth. Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) and Kari Shipman (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Frazee) hit back to back singles to open the inning, forcing a Simpson pitching change before Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) came up to bat. The Yellowjackets went down in order after the pitching change, as Simpson would score two more in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Yellowjackets 5-0.

Thomfohrda and Shipman had two hits each for the Yellowjackets while Taipale and Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) each had one.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing five runs on 10 hits while walking one in the complete game effort. Hendrickson ends the season with a 20-9 record.

The Yellowjackets wrap up their extremely successful 2015-16 season with an overall record of 27-15. They finished with a 13-3 UMAC record.
