Stout Takes Two from the Yellowjackets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket baseball team was back in action Tuesday afternoon, as they hit the road to take on a familiar foe in the UW-Stout Blue Devils. This time around the Yellowjackets and Blue Devils, longtime foes in the WIAC, would face each other in a non-conference double header.

Game one started out about as well as the Yellowjackets could have hoped.

Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) and Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) hit back-to-back two-out home runs over the fence in left center field to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead before the Blue Devils even came up to bat.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets that lead would be short lived. Stout scored two in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead over the yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets started to mount a rally in the top of the fourth. Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) led off the inning with a bunt single and Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) reached on an error by the Stout third baseman to chase the Blue Devil starting pitcher, and put runners on first and second with no outs. Following a wild pitch that advanced both runners, Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior) hit a ground out to the first baseman to score Wage, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

The Yellowjacket would scratch one more across two batters later when Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) hit a grounder that was misplayed by the Stout shortstop, cutting the deficit to 5-4. The rally would end there for the Yellowjackets, as the next batter grounded out to end the inning.

Stout did not take long to respond to the Yellowjacket rally, as they sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Four of those nine batters would score, putting the Yellowjackets in a 9-4 deficit. This time there was no rally, as the Yellowjackets were only able to get two runners on base over the final two innings.

Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing nine runs (four earned) on 13 hits while walking one and striking out four over 4.1 innings to take the loss. Schneider falls to 3-3 on the season with the loss.

Brady Stocker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) came in to relieve Schneider, allowing only one hit with one strikeout over the final 1.2 innings. Stocker has not given up an earned run in his last five appearances. In that time Stocker has pitched 13.2 innings, allowing only one earned run on six hits while walking five and striking out 13.

UW-Stout 4, Yellowjackets 1

The Yellowjackets jumped out to an early lead in game two, as they looked to salvage a split.

Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) opened the game with a single in the hole at short. He then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. With one out and runners on second and third, Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) hit a ground out at the Stout first baseman to score Wage, giving the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Devils got two back in the second to take the lead from the Yellowjackets. They would score two more in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, as the Yellowjackets were once again forced to try and complete the rally.

The Yellowjackets managed to get runners on second and third with two outs in the sixth, but a groundout ended the inning. They put runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, but once again any chance of a rally was ended, as the next Yellowjacket batter struck out to end the game.

Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out one in the complete-game effort. Lewis falls to 2-5 on the season.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (13-15, 9-5 UMAC) is a road trip to Minneapolis, Minn. to wrap up the UMAC portion of the regular season against North Central University. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
