Defensive Miscues Doom Yellowjackets

Box Score

St. Scholastica 11, Yellowjackets 3 (6 innings)

Following Friday afternoon rain-delayed instant classic in the UMAC softball playoffs, the Yellowjackets found themselves in the driver's seat as they needed just one more win to advance to the NCAA tournament.

For the second time in these playoffs, the Yellowjackets would take on St. Scholastica. If the Yellowjackets won they would be the UMAC champions, but if the Saints won then the champion would have to wait another day to be crowned.

For as strong as the Yellowjackets defense was on Friday against the Saints, they were equally as weak on Saturday.

Most of the damage was done in the second inning, as the Saints would score six runs in the inning. However, only one of those runs was earned, as the Yellowjackets committed two two-out errors, allowing the Saints to extend the inning and their lead.

Facing a 6-0 deficit after two innings, the Yellowjackets attempted to mount a comeback. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) led off the third with a single to left field. Then with two outs, Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) ripped a double to center field to score Hanson. Following back-to-back walks, Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) got a hold of one, sending a single to left field to score Taipale and Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes), as the Yellowjackets halved the Saints lead to 6-3 by the end of the half inning.

Unfortunately, that was all the offense that the Yellowjackets could muster on the day, as they only had two more hits over the final three innings. The Saints would score one in the fourth and four in the sixth, winning the game on a two-run walk-off home run.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing 11 runs (six earned) on 13 hits while walking one and striking out one in the complete-game effort. Hendrickson falls to 19-7 on the season.

The conference championship will now be decided tomorrow, Sunday, May 8, as the Yellowjackets (26-13, 13-3 UMAC) and the Saints take on each other in a winner take all matchup. First pitch from Kenwood Field is set for 12:00 p.m.
