Pipers Power Past Yellowjackets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjackets baseball team was back in action Sunday, as they traveled to St. Paul, Minn. to take on the Hamline University Pipers. The Yellowjackets were looking to continue to build some momentum against the Pipers after having swept North Central the day before

Hamline 9, Yellowjackets 4

Things looked good early for the Yellowjackets in game one. Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) reached on a single to left field before advancing to second when Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) hit into a fielder's choice that the Hamline third baseman misplayed. Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) then smacked a double to left field to score Pitts, as the Yellowjackets took an early 1-0 lead.

That lead grew to 3-0 in the third. Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Miller then hit his second double of the game, this time to right field, to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) was then able to drive in a run, sending a fly ball to left field to score Cuello. Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) drove in the second run of the inning on a single to right field, as the Yellowjackets looked to be in control of this game.

Everything unraveled for the Yellowjackets in the bottom of the third. The Pipers sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring nine of them as a 3-0 Yellowjacket lead turned into a 9-3 deficit.

The Yellowjackets would score one more run in the fifth, but the six run deficit proved too much to overcome, as they fell in game one 9-4.
Richard Vanden Branden (Neenah, Wis./Saint Mary Central) got the start for the Yellowjackets, allowing nine runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out one in 2.1 innings pitched. Boone Elkins (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) relieved Vanden Branden, allowing three hits while walking one and striking out one in 2.2 scoreless innings. Tyler Kronstedt (Andover, Minn./Andover) pitched a scoreless final inning for the Yellowjackets.

Vanden Branden was credited with the loss and falls to 2-3 on the season.

Hamline 17, Yellowjackets 6

The second game started out about as poorly as a game can start for the Yellowjackets.

Hamline sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. Eight of those 12 ended up scoring as the Pipers hit two home runs in the inning.

The Yellowjackets attempted to mount a furious comeback in the third inning. Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) led off the inning with a home run to left center. Michael Osterman (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena Vista) then walked before Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West) and Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) hit back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) hit into an RBI fielder's choice to Osterman to cut the deficit down to 8-2. Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) then cut the Yellowjackets deficit to 8-5 with one swing of the bat as he launched his team and conference leading 10th home run of the season over the left field wall.

Unfortunately that was all the closer the Yellowjackets would get, as Hamline would score two in the third, one in the fourth, five in the fifth, and one in the sixth to defeat the Yellowjackets 17-6.

Brady Stocker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) got his first career start for the Yellowjackets, allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits while walking one in one inning pitched. Tyler Kronstedt (Andover, Minn./Andover) relieved Stocker, allowing six runs on eight hits with a walk in three innings pitched. Ryan Rukavina (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) came on in relief of Kronstedt, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while walking one and striking out one in one inning. Trevor Stone (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) finished out the game for the Yellowjackets, allowing one run on one hit while walking one in one inning pitched.

Stocker took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season.

The Yellowjackets (15-17, 11-5 UMAC) wrap up the regular season on Tuesday, May 10 when they host Gustavus Adolphus College. First pitch from Ted Whereatt Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
