Last Week's Highlights
- The University of Wisconsin Superior
defeated Bethany Lutheran College 69-54 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference women's basketball semifinals on Wednesday night, surviving a cold-shooting night as a team by hitting free throws and playing a disciplined defensive game.
- Sophomore
C.J. Pillath (Coleman, Wis./Coleman H.S.) made it a clean sweep for the Yellowjackets as UWS won all seven of the UMAC Field Athlete of the Week honors during the 2016-17 indoor season, taking home his
fifth such honor this season.
-
Bruno Birzitis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Distance Education Secondary) scored in overtime of the decisive mini-game and UW-Superior
came back to win its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opening round series against the University of Wisconsin Stout.
Men's Basketball (7-18, 6-10 UMAC)
- The Yellowjackets saw their season come to an end, closing the UMAC regular season splitting on the final weekend including a 94-77 victory over Crown College last Friday night. Freshman forward
Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) averaged nearly a double-double during his first collegiate go-around with 15.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per outing in 29.9 minutes per game in 25 starts for UW-Superior. Junior guard
Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East H.S.) transferred to join the Yellowjackets, averaging 14.6 points in his season at the Division III level. Sophomore
Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights H.S.) also hit double figures on the season, averaging 12.2 points on the year. Each ranked in the top-20 in the UMAC for scoring: Monteiro no. 8, Coleman no. 11, and Scott no. 20.
Women's Basketball (22-4, 16-0 UMAC)
- UW-Superior rolled to an undefeated UMAC regular season, its second-straight, to claim the conference crown this past weekend, defeating the University of Minnesota Morris 76-63 last Saturday in the regular season finale. After a victory over Bethany Lutheran on Wednesday night, the Yellowjackets will host the Cougars in the UMAC Championship game this Saturday. While UWS defeated UM-Morris twice in the regular season, the Cougars were definitely the Yellowjackets' fiercest competition. Morris led by a point at the half before UW-Superior turned it on in the second half Saturday. The two teams were even after 20 minutes in their first meeting, and the Yellowjackets pulled away in the third quarter for an 81-72 victory back on January 13.
Men's Hockey (8-17-2, 1-6-1 WIAC)
- UW-Superior won its first-round WIAC Commissioner's Cup Tournament series against UW-Stout in comeback fashion: after falling 4-3 on Friday night, the Yellowjackets won 4-2 on Saturday night and then claimed the decisive mini-game 1-0 in overtime on a score by freshman
Bruno Birzitis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Distance Education Secondary). Not to be out-shined, senior
Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) scored a hat trick in Saturday's win. This weekend, UWS will face a tough challenge against top-seed and No. 3-nationally-ranked University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. While the Pointers swept the season series against the Yellowjackets, UW-Superior showed its tenacity falling 3-2 against the Pointers back on Jan. 24 in Superior. The semifinal round also features a two-game series with a mini game if necessary.
Women's Hockey (12-13-0, 2-7-0 WIAC)
- The Yellowjackets ride a five-game winning streak into this weekend's WIAC O'Brien Cup Tournament semifinal round, but UW-Superior faces stiff competition in the No. 3-ranked University of Wisconsin River Falls in its tournament-opening series. The Falcons edged out the Yellowjackets 2-1 in their last meeting back on January 28 earlier this season. Since that game, UW-Superior has not lost including four victories on the road. Freshman
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) has scored six goals and added three assists during the Yellowjackets' five-game unbeaten streak.
Softball (0-0)
- UW-Superior will gets its season started at the Finlandia Dome Classic this weekend, taking on four tough regional foes. Friday night, the Yellowjackets open their season against UW-Stevens Point. Saturday, UW-Superior takes on another in-state rival, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Sunday, the Yellowjackets face a pair of foes taking on Marian University and Concordia University of Wisconsin. That last team is the lone rival that UW-Superior matched up with last season, with the Yellowjackets leaving with a 4-3 win at last year's Finlandia Dome Tournament.
Men's and Women's Track & Field
- After another conference Athlete of the Week honor for a UW-Superior athlete -- once again with
C.J. Pillath (Coleman, Wis./Coleman H.S.) taking home the honors -- the Yellowjackets will compete at this week's UMAC Indoor Championships hosted by the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. Select events will take place Friday night with the majority of the events taking place on Saturday beginning at noon. To plan your viewing and follow UW-Superior athletes, check out the
