The University of Wisconsin Superior will embark on its annual spring break excursion to Florida and specifically the Gene Cusic Classic in the Fort Myers area. The team will return to the diamond for the first time in nearly three weeks Friday when the action gets underway for 12 games in eight days.
UW-Superior (2-2) will open the week under the sun at 9 a.m. (ET) on Friday morning where the Yellowjackets will match up against a regional foe Marian University for the second time this season. The Sabres (4-1) knocked off UWS 8-0 in six innings on Sunday, Feb. 26 earlier this season but are already in Florida and will have several match-ups on the docket before taking on the Yellowjackets once again. The team will continue the action on Friday morning taking on Centenary (N.J.) University, where the Cyclones will meet UW-Superior in their Florida finale at 11 a.m.
The Yellowjackets have been led by rookies offensively yet this season as infielder
Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) earned the title of UMAC Player of the Week after her debut performance, hitting 9-of-13 with three doubles, four runs scored, and three RBIs at the Finlandia Dome Classic in Marquette, Michigan. Fellow first-year infielder BobbiJean Miller batted .455 for her first four games, driving in two on two doubles. Rookie right-hander
Megan Pehrson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) made an impressive debut on the mound, allowing just four earned runs in a pair of complete game efforts in Marquette, striking out 13 in the process. Senior righty
Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) tossed 12.1 innings on the weekend, striking out six while also adding a pair of hits in five trips to the plate.
Saturday morning, the Yellowjackets take on Castleton (Vt.) University. The preseason favorite in the North Atlantic Conference, the Spartans open their season in Florida on Thursday. Saturday afternoon, UW-Superior meets conference foe Crown College (0-4) in another key regional match-up. The two teams will meet again next Thursday, March 23. After a day of rest on Sunday, the Yellowjackets will take on Manchester (Ind.) University in a doubleheader next Monday. The Spartans (0-7-1) have had a slow start to their season that they'll look to remedy in Florida, but UW-Superior will hope it's not at their expensive as they face Manchester twice more at the Classic: once each on Thursday and Friday, March 23-24.
Tuesday, the Yellowjackets take on Ave Maria University (NAIA) and face another regional match-up against North Central (Ill.) College - not to be confused with North Central University of the UMAC. Their final match-up of the week will be against NJCAA foe Florida Southwestern State University, who will provide both live stats and video online of the match-up.
