The University of Wisconsin Superior will open its 2016-17 season this Sunday at the Tucson Invitational Games where the Yellowjackets will compete in nine games in seven days including the debut of head coach
Frank Pufall as the team looks to take the next step in its second season in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
Picked third in last month's
UMAC Preseason Coaches Poll, UW-Superior finished 16-19 a season ago after posting a 2-8 record to open the season in Tucson. This year, the Yellowjackets face an entirely new slate of opponents in their search for a hotter start to the season. UW-Superior's primary foe in Arizona - both in terms of chronological order and frequency - will be Allegheny (Pa.) College. The Yellowjackets and Gators will meet three times, first in the team's season opener on Sunday while also meeting next Tuesday and Friday in single games. Allegheny is 2-2 on the young season.
Monday, UW-Superior takes Oberlin (Ohio) College in a doubleheader. The Yeo is 4-0 on the season with four games on the schedule before taking on the Yellowjackets in a twinbill. After a second meeting with Allegheny, UWS matches up against a regional foe in Kalamazoo (Mich.) College. The Hornets (3-0) have four Arizona match-ups before taking on the Yellowjackets Tuesday.
After a day off on Wednesday, UW-Superior takes on Grinnell (Iowa) College in another regional match-up. The Pioneers are currently 2-2 and will make their Arizona debut against the Yellowjackets, stopping off in Arkansas for a series on the way. After its third and final meeting with Allegheny, UWS will continue in-region play with match-ups against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Hamline University on Friday and Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday.
The early-season action does not end there as the Yellowjackets return to the northland in two weeks for a doubleheader match-up against Macalester College. Originally scheduled to take place inside U.S. Bank Stadium, UW-Superior will hope for a continued thaw in the Twin Cities as the games will now take place at the Scots' home field in St. Paul.
