Last Week's Highlights
- The University of Wisconsin Superior men's and women's track & field teams started their outdoor season with some success, including junior
Svenja Ruehl (Kirchuers, Germany/Gymnasium Philippinum Marburg) earning
the title of UMAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her impressive performance in the long jump.
- The Yellowjackets swept the UMAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week honors, with juniors
Jordan Koski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon H.S.) and
Noah Potratz (Ripon, Wis./Ripon H.S.) claiming
the titles respectively.
- Baseball and softball schedules for this weekend have already been affected by the weather. Check out the details
here.
NCAA Division III Week
- UW-Superior is celebrating NCAA Division III week with a series of features containing unique athlete stories. The first
was released Wednesday, highlighting three-sport athlete
Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.). Stay tuned to this website and social media for more stories in the coming days.
Baseball (2-12, 0-0 UMAC)
- UW-Superior was swept out of Illinois in its three-game series with the University of Chicago last weekend, getting three of its top pitching performances of the season but could not match that effort on offense. Senior right-hander
Richard Vanden Branden (Neenah, Wis./St. Mary Central H.S.) worked a complete game Sunday, allowing just one first-inning run while scattering five hits on the day. This weekend's schedule will be slightly different than originally posted as the Yellowjackets will first travel to St. Peter, Minnesota on Friday to take on Gustavus Adolphus College in a non-conference doubleheader (originally scheduled for Sunday). The Gusties (11-7) knocked off UW-Superior 10-4 earlier this season in the teams' lone meeting in Tucson, Arizona. Saturday, the Yellowjackets will open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play against Martin Luther College. The Knights (4-8) have lost three straight after opening their UMAC season with a victory over Bethany Lutheran College. Tuesday night, UW-Superior will take on Northland College in the team's home opener at Whereatt Field.
Men's and Women's Golf
- The season's second half begins Friday for the UWS golf teams as they will open their spring season Friday at the Crown College Match Play Triangular.
Softball (8-9, 1-1 UMAC)
- The Yellowjackets opened up their UMAC campaign last weekend with a split against Martin Luther, falling 4-3 in eight innings in the opener followed by a 4-1 victory in game two. Rookie right-hander
Megan Pehrson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) took the decision in both games and struck out 16 in 7.2 innings: an average of two strikeouts per every three outs. After field conditions pushed back UW-Superior's Wednesday series against Northland College to Sunday, the two teams will battle each other and the rain with precipitation in the forecast. First, the Yellowjackets will take on the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars are 4-16 on the season while Northland is just 3-15. Tuesday, UW-Superior will travel across the bridge to face UMAC rival the College of St. Scholastica.
Men's and Women's Track & Field
- After award-winning performances for Koski, Potratz, and Ruehl last week, the Yellowjackets will look to continue that momentum heading into a new week. Saturday, UW-Superior will travel to Decorah, Iowa for the Norse Relays hosted by Luther College. On Wednesday night, the Yellowjacket women will compete at the Hamline Women's Invite in St. Paul, Minnesota. The UWS men will have an opportunity to compete on their own stage later this month.
