Yellowjackets drop two to Gustavus ahead of UMAC openers Saturday

Stephen Albertson
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The University of Wisconsin Superior could not get its offense going while Gustavus Adolphus College continued to swing hot bats, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader by 9-2 and 15-1 finals on Friday afternoon in St. Peter, Minnesota.

The Yellowjackets stumble twice headed to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon. UW-Superior (2-14) got a seventh-inning solo home run from sophomore infielder Stephen Albertson (Stillwater, Minn/Stillwater H.S.) to break up a shutout attempt by Gustavus Adolphus (13-7), who had hits from eight of their nine starters while six different Gusties contributed at least an RBI in the nightcap. Gustavus scored four in the third inning to push the lead out to 5-0 and then scored in each of the final four innings including plating seven in the bottom of the sixth to turn the contest into a laugher.  Three of the Yellowjackets' five hits in the game came from the seven-eight-nine spots in the line-up.

Junior left-hander Jonah Lundequam (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland H.S.) fell to 0-3 on the season working 4.0 innings allowing six earned runs on nine hits and three walks. Rookie right-hander Elliot Danhoff (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone H.S.) tossed the final two frames, striking out two while surrendering seven earned on five hits and four walks. Kyle Pinke (1-0) worked six shutout innings for the Gusties, striking out five while scattering three hits.

Gustavus Adolphus 9, UW-Superior 2
The Yellowjackets had a bit more success offensively in game one, taking an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Freshman outfielder Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) led off with a double, eventually coming around to score on an error on the Gustavus infield. Senior infielder Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward H.S.) singled with two out in the inning, stealing second to get in scoring position, but the Yellowjackets couldn't add on.

The Gusties once again scored in the final three innings, plating two, two, and then five runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, knocking rookie right-hander Austin Miller (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison H.S.) out of the game after five innings. He struck out three while allowing four earned on eight hits. A pair of hurlers worked the final inning, surrendering five runs on five hits. UW-Superior added its second run of the day in the fifth, then knotting the game at 2-2 before Gustavus pulled away. After junior Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle H.S.) reached on a fielder's choice, he stole second and eventually came around to score on an RBI double by Patko.

Sam Carlson pitched a complete game scattering eight hits while allowing one earned and striking out two for the Gusties. Brock Peterson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead Gustavus.
