SUPERIOR, Wis. (February 26, 2018) – The Yellowjackets are headed to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament, something that no other UMAC team has done. Superior will face a familiar foe on Friday, the UW-Whitewater Warhawks.
Superior is coming off their third-straight UMAC Tournament Championship, beating the Bethany Lutheran Vikings 66-54 last Saturday. In the game, senior Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds; her tournament totals earned her the MVP as she tallied 40 points and 20 rebounds on the week.
The 'Jackets also saw great performances out of Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) and Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti). Norlin poured in 19 points in the opening game vs Northwestern, while Larson added a huge stat line of 10 points, nine boards, five assists, two steals and a block. Against the Vikings, Norlin was responsible for 16 rebounds and eight points, while Larson had seven points, six boards, and two blocks on the night.
Off the bench, the Yellowjackets saw great support from Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) and Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter). In the two Tournament games, Reinertsen had 12 points, nine rebounds (five offensive), and two blocks. Carpenter was solid from deep, hitting 3-of-4 3-pointers.
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) winners, the No. 12 Whitewater Warhawks (24-3), are coming off a nail-biting win over UW-Oshkosh last Saturday, just edging the Titans 68-65. Brooke Trewyn who's averaging 13.0 points /game and 6.3 rebounds/game leads the Warhawks; they also see double-digit scoring from Malia Smith with 11.1 points/game. While they don't put up astonishing offensive numbers, Whitewater is known for what they do defensively, as they average 10.5 steals/game and force an average of 20 turnovers/game.
