SUPERIOR, Wis. (May 7, 2018) – The Yellowjacket baseball team secured the no. 5 spot in the UMAC Tournament Sunday afternoon. Superior fill face off in the double-elimination tournament Thursday, May 10 with the No. 4 seed Northland Lumberjacks.
The Yellowjacket have hit the ball well this season, Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) leads the team in batting average (.406), hits (43), home runs (11), and RBIs (32). Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) who has been a staple at short stop, averaging .396 with 39 hits and is 11-of-13 in stolen base attempts, while Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) averages .376 in 101 at-bats; he has eight doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 27 RBIs on the season.
The 'Jackets tote 11 players that average better than .300. and collectively hit .317 for second best in the UMAC. They lead the conference in hits with 343, triples at 15, and stolen bases with 56.
The Superior pitching staff is in the middle of the pack, averaging a team 7.64 ERA in 254.1 innings pitched. The 'Jackets lead the conference in strikeouts with 209, while allowing an opposing team average of .299.
Freshman Ryan Rodriguez (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) has been solid with a 1-1 record on the season. He owns a 4.67 ERA in a team-high 34.1 innings pitched and has befuddled opponents with 44 strikeouts, good for fifth in the UMAC. Another Freshman, Auggie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) has faced 129 batters this season, allowing an opposing team .271 average, and has struck out 22 batters.
The tournament is set to begin Thursday at 1 p.m. when No. 4 Northland and the No. 5 'Jackets meet. That will be followed by a 4 p.m. game between No. 2 Bethany Lutheran and No. 3 Northwestern. The final game at 7 p.m. will see No. 1 St. Scholastica take on the winner of the opening game. The loser of the first game will be eliminated from the tournament.Â

The UMAC Tournament has the following admissions prices: Single Day Adult Ticket, $10; Single Day Student/Senior Ticket - $5; Adult Tournament Pass, $15; Student/Senior Tournament Pass, $7. All UMAC students, staff and faculty are FREE with valid institution ID for all games. No other passes will be accepted.
