SAINT, PAUL, Minn.: For the second time in as many weeks, UW-Superior senior Fauston Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) won a weight throw competition, this time at the St. Thomas Showcase at the Anderson Recreation and Sports Center Friday.

Wirtz's winning throw of 16.46 meters came on his third attempt of the event. He smashed his previous career best of 15.87 meters, set last Saturday at the Lake Superior Challenge. The throw currently ranks second in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, just behind teammate C.J. Pillath (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) at 17.71 meters.
 
Pillath finished fifth overall in the weight throw Friday with a mark of 15.52 meters, achieved on his final attempt of the competition.

Pillath finished seventh overall in the shot put on the day with a top mark of 14.80 meters. He was 2.7 meters behind UW-Eau Claire's David Kornack, who won the event.

On the women's side, sophomore Carson Haase (Brandon, S.D./Brandon Valley) was seventh in the weight throw with a mark of 14.15 meters. She also finished ninth in the shot put at 10.89 meters.
 
Superior hosts the Yellowjacket Open Saturday at 11 a.m., at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.
